Coilovers on a bay

  1. Hi

I'm looking at fitting coilovers to my 77 Bay.
Just wondered what people who already have
    fitted the think???

    Cheers

I still can't get to grips with the price of these things, and dropped spindles, if they were a realistic price i'm sure they'd sell more, scene tax at it's most extreme I reckon

  3. totally mate! totally agree! I got some pretty cheap but really good coil overs for my mk1 golf, cost me 150 quid for basically the same things but with out the metal rod! stupid costs for reasons I cant work out, and drop spindles I can kind of understand as they need to be cast dont they? ( I have no idea lol)

  4. I just bought the EZ RIDER COIL-OVER CONVERSION KIT. I'm thinking of adding dropped spindles too.

I'm hoping the Coilovers will improve the handling.

Nope drop spindles would need to be forged for strength as the castings would not stand the hammer they take - cast steel has a tendency to have small air voids if its not cast correctly (og are forged)

  6. They just machine original spindles they are not new items , well I say just I'm sure there is a fair amount of work in it.
For me I wouldn't fit coil overs if they were free , I just don't like them

  7. So,,, Got the Coilovers fitted & dropped the back end too. Im happy with it overall but had a few probs with the rear so Milk&Two
are gonna give the chassis a notch.

  8. why do you need to notch the chassis grum? Is something rubbing?
My bus is lowered and the left side (or so it sounds) is catching somewhere when you go round a sharp left hand bend too fast but I assumed it was the tyre rubbing on the arch (which I couldn't understand as there is a good 15mm between arch and tyre, unless the camber is changing?).

We had one in recently that had them fitted. We had to fit new top and bottom bushes and trim down the bump stop. They also needed spacing because they were not riding vertical. Fitted to this bus they had about 2" suspension travel. The bus did drive nice. The overall set up of the entire bus was lush but I don't like coil overs. I think they are dreadful things. I'd rather the adjustable beam.

  10. Hi,

The rear suspension arm is banging against the chassis so I'm having Milk&2 check it for overall safety (I'm not a mechanic & dont like chancing it)
I cut the Bump stop mountings completely as they were in the way. They are being replaced with a modded stop bar.
How much have you lowered your rear end by???

  11. I am only down 1 spline at the back (I think - already lowered when I bought the bus) so the top rim of the 15 inch wheel is exactly in line with the wheel arch, not quite as low as yours.

I was thinking of fitting coilovers to mine as I have no bumpstops and understand it would stop the suspension bottoming out if I drop it 1 more notch on the front adjusters?

This lowering lark is a right minefield when you are trying to get it right!

  12. Its a pain in the A?%E for sure.
I dont know if I'm understanding you right but Coilovers do away with torsion leaves & adjusters. You can adjust your height on the coilover itself. :)

  13. Grum how much did you drop the back end by? i'm looking at going down the coilover route myself, but i'm wondering what's best to use at the back?

  14. I used t2d coil overs (from a beetle I think) and did the trick, no more rubbing

  15. Alright fella.
The backend is running 4" drop modded spring plates from Red9 design that are set 1
spline down from standard. :) it's actually slightly higher at the back now than in the picture.
It's got a bit of rake now.

    Grum :)

  16. thanks for the input mate it's appreciated as my bus sits freakishly high at the moment. i'm not after slamming it, just bringing him back down to earth. i've got around a 5" gap between the top of the tyre & wheel arches front & back.

  17. This is how mine sat before I fitted the Coilovers & modded swing plates. Have you got your Coilovers yet???

  18. thanks for the picture for the comparison. No mate, i've not got my coilovers yet or springplates yet & mine looks to be sitting a similar sort of height to yours too.

  19. Looks the same dude. I've actually got a set of 2 to 4" drop coilovers that I fitted originally before I decided to go lower. I was gonna put them on ebay but still have not got round to it. They are from red 9 design. If your interested let me know.

    :)
