  4. I have grown a few heritage strains
It takes a brave pallet to eat them but thats how used to the norm we are
I grew some parsnips a few years ago that would put black pepper to shame
Yet when coverd in honey and mollases mix were food of the gods

It's amazing how bad commercial strains are when it's off season, once you know how a vege should taste.

  8. Biggest difference I've noticed is radishes. Shop bought are just little bags off water, my mother in laws homegrown will blow your head off!

The seeds the mem sahib got for this season are heritage varieties. We're hoping for a better harvest this year, We're learning as we go . Will have to post some pics of our allotment later in the year. I'm not sure if your own veggies really taste better, but the fact that you planted and harvested them makes them taste better in your head and that's good enough for me :)

Our tomato crop has been decimated by the hailstorm we had the other day. :(
Just as they were getting ready to harvest.

  14. I'd love to do more growing... but it does slightly depend what shop you buy from... and what you grow at home. You can't beat good home grown, an easy one we do is lettuce grown in a pot - fantastic! But I've also had some pretty disappointing stuff... Supermarket veg is total rubbish though.

The veg from my local corner shop is actually pretty good, the tomatoes are at least twice as tasty as the ones Sainsbury's sell and probably 4 times tastier than the disgusting ones I had from Asda the other day. Somehow the Turkish shops and restaurants in North London manage to get hold of some really good produce, not expensive either. My local Turkish butcher is fantastic too, the lamb's half the price of the next nearest butcher and tastes a million times better than supermarket meat.

Not much use if you don't live round here, but it's worth trying markets, car boots, greengrocers, convenience shops, anywhere really, the quality does vary. Supermarkets prioritise shelf life and appearance over flavour so best avoided IME.

  15. Are they "German Quality" Heritage or just Chinese carp that'll rust quickly? ;)
