Engine trouble - where do I start looking?

  1. Is your fuel tank vent open.....try a run without the fuel cap on.

  2. Block servo off at engine end and test drive

  3. Is that just by taking the pipe off the manifold and blocking it?

  5. Yes it will prove if servo is faulty or not

  7. I had something similar on my bug turned out to be one of the vacuumed block offs had got knocked off
When the engine is running have a feel around the carb and see if any unblocked or unconnected brass tubes are sucking if so black it and see if that resolves the problem.
If not could be a blocked idle valve unscrew it blow it out and see if that helps
Could also be fuel tank not breathing and forming a vacuum try running with fuel cap off

  8. Cheers, I'll have a look at that

The engine will die with not enough fuel or too much.
Dirt in jets makes it lean so that when the choke pops off it dies.

    Alternatively too much..

When it dies , does it stink of petrol out of the exhaust?. This could be fuel overflowing in the carburettor - all the time you are driving the engine sucks enough air then it floods when you slow down and will not start again unless you leave it an hour.
The cause of that can either be dirt in the carburettor : fuel metering valve or a sticking float .

I did once have a Morris Marina. Got it up to 100mph on the M27 going down past Rownhams Services eastbound. Then the float wedged down into and jammed in the rust in the bottom of the float chamber. VW carbs would have crudded up long before that..
