Update. I contacted the garage today. Apparently one of the apprentices had put the original unit in back to front, killed it and then put a non-matching one in. The garage is sending me a new pertronix. Assuming it turns up I'll say no more ;-)
But as always thanks to all contributors - I knew my intuition was right - but its nice to have it so thoroughly confirmed
Fixed that for you. Blame the apprentice? - face saving. Good news though-ish? You can fit it yourself like you did before, spend £15 on a timing light and know for a fact it's good to go.
Do you think that's good enough to just get a new unit? They must be able to offer you something else too, like a full refund?

Wow! That is some offer... Not every day an almost complete stranger is so kind and generous You must be either 1.swimming in timing units 2.won the lottery 3.a real decent chap. I'm betting on 3.
