gap, hydraulic lifters

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Borninabug, Jul 6, 2013.

  1. What should the gap be between valve stem and screw when setting up with hydraulic lifters

should be no gap, as the rocker touches the pushrod turn the adjuster 1.5turns after that

However, many people don't know they're there and gap them. Another for the list of simple satisfying sort-outs along with servo vac hose one way valve the wrong way round - I think haynes gets this wrong in some editions - does in mine.

  4. Yup I gapped t six thou as per American Haynes supplement for GE it ran no different so they must have been all to pot to begin with

  5. All sorted but engine still has no guts and couldn't pull you out of bed. Ticks over beautiful. Any suggestions guys

It seems to be using loads of fuel

Do you know for sure it has hydraulic lifters? At the age these beasties are, the engine number by now may be meaningless as far as the guts are concerned...
I had a WO 1700 - got excited - high compression, fancy cam and 80+hp, but no such luck, was just the case and had been rebuilt with std 1700 bits.

  7. Defo. I had two out this am cos they had gone spongy. Rebuilt and set properly engine sounds great but no power

Run it for a while then set them again, they need to pump up, if set when not fully pumped your valves will stay open

  9. I think you mean the valves won't open enough... if the valves stay open then the engine won't run ;)

...and 15/40 - they don't pump up well with 20/50...

nope, if he sets them when they are not fully pumped up, when he runs it the theoretical gap will become smaller as the lifters get longer, thus stay open and cause lack of power ;)

depends what year Bentley manual you have or which one they chose to take the data from, they started at 2 then suggested 1.5, maybe had some issues and changed it maybe not :)

  16. Set with engine hot?

That's why they have springs in them. ;)

yeah but if they worked proper they wouldn't rattle on startup while they pumped up :)

    You loose. :D

  20. The spring rattling, is the one in the lifter rattling due to a lack of oil... the oil stops the lifter from compressing ;)

Hence the valves won't open far enough!! :)
