gap, hydraulic lifters

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Borninabug, Jul 6, 2013.

  1. If any have been allowed to drain oil out when removed they'll need bleeding. 1.5/2 turns tightened. Run for 20 mins should settle them in, might rattle a bit at first.

noooottt the spring rattling the rrockkkeeer arms cos they got big gaps cos the oils all gone and there shorter

  3.

The rocker arm won't rattle as the lifter has a spring in it.... it applies tension (compressional lift) to the valve train... plus I've never heard a hydro rocker rattle, just the lifter clattering!! :)

I have to agree with Paul. The first time mine did it (1st bus had a T25 2L) I thought something had snapped inside the engine. It's too deep sounding for the rockers IMO.

  7. Best change the batteries in your hearing aid then ;)

  8. When the two I took out this morning had drained down they weren't opening the valves at all. So they rattled
I then rebuilt under oil but not pressurised
Placed in the block and adjusted to 1.5/2 turns
started and pumped up making lifter longer and keeping valve open bus very sluggish
    To be reset tomorrow
    The saga continues

Having done what you did, you should have it right first time. I tighten with fingers until contact - it's seemed easy enough.
It is possible for the thin push-rods to sit on the edge of the lifter, so the 2 turns actually open the valve rather than compress the follower. they need a jiggle to ensure they're sitting in the centre of the lifter as you put them in. Sometimes they'll jump into place, but your settings will be wrong, sometimes they won't and the valves will be 2 turns open (2.5mm). Perhaps this is an explanation?

  10. Checked em all again found another one had gone soft. Pulled it refilled and rebuilt it and put it back. Still no guts. Must be timing or fuel. It's off to a guy who use to be a chief vw tech in the 70s and 80s at a local dealership. When I spoke to him today he asked all the right questions and seemed to know the bosch injection inside out s,pose he would being trained by vw. Fingers crossed

Thanks for answers and help help at least it's finally on the road and in snagging stages.
PS the intention was not to cause a domestic between sponsors.

We all get on well and have a dig at each other :D
