Hi everyone, As I was driving along today it became harder and harder to get into 1st gear, then harder to get into 2nd and by the time I got home only 3rd into 4th seemed normal. I reversed her down the drive and then could not release the reverse gear unless I gave the gear stick a real wallop. Is this likely to be the dreaded gearbox collapse and if so is it an expensive replacement.
Gearboxes don't "collapse" Likely to be your gear linkage has come loose at the back, or needs adjustment at the front. Straightforward enough to do. You'll then find all your gears are where you left them
Right then what are the odds and who's taking the book. I came on to suggest the clutch cable just about to go twaaaanggg or needed adjustment. But snotty has two against him already so I'll go on snotty' s side and make it two all, so I'm saying adjustments required on linkage and possibly pay a little attention to your shuttlecock And when was the last time you changed your gearbox oil ? Ozziedog,,,,,,,,, that evens it up nicely
Tbh, I would say the fine fellows above will have nailed it, but as its turned into a competitive thread, il add a different guess.... I reckon it's got an empi rear coupler, and the collar bit has started twisting in the cage bit...
sounds exactly how mine behaved as the clutch cable started to split and break. when i checked it (gearbox end) it was frayed and only a few strands remained connected - these were obviously stretching hence the difficulty getting gears (or getting out of them). As above, if you can select gears easily with the engine not running then it will def be clutch related. If gear selection is still cr@p with the engine off then it is likely to be your gear linkage.
The clue is that 1 & 2 & rev are difficult - all on the left side - so the plate under the cover at the bottom of the gear stick needs adjusting or is loose -
It sounds like a fraying / stretching clutch cable to me. but.. Just in case, check the orientation of the gearstick and the shift plate on the floor of the cab. If this has moved it can make shifting difficult. I had this and the shifter just need loosening adjusting and retightening and all was good. It's worth a quick look and a lot cheaper than a gearbox : - ) Stirlingmoz
@Luca Try adjusting the clutch. Lay under in front of the left rear wheel. You will see the gearbox and this Tighten it ie turn clockwise. The cable / bolt may need holding with grips. It may work or the cable may be about to snap.
As a novice can you advise me as to how I check the clutch cable. For example where is it and how can I see if it is frayed.
Oops, I confess I was pushing and forcing the gears in rather than offering them up so to speak. What dMage might I have done.
