  2. Used to hitchhike all the time when I were a nipper and didn't think anything of it but would be horrified if my kids did that now.

  3. I think i would,i have picked 2 up on my way to skegness many years ago. I dont see any these day's or am just not
were they are lol. You never know who or what that person is like until you stop and pick them up. you could be best of freinds at the end of the journey,or just say good bye. I would hitch a lift myself only becouse am a bloke and know i could handle myself if things got out of hand. I also reconise that you girls can handle yourself

  4. Used to back in the day, would not now, would not pick anyone up either, to many years doing what I do makes me weary of everything and everyone.

  5. Used to, would now if I needed to and do pick up hitchers still - not many about though. Met loads of interesting people.

I did pick up a couple once - from Buxton to Sheffield. I was in my early twenties and new to Sheffield and keen to get to know some people. They were of a similar age and seemed respectable looking. When I stopped for them, they kept saying 'are you sure' before getting into the car! They were very grateful for the lift but I had to promise them I wouldn't pick up strangers again!!

  9. I saw one the other day. A little old lady in her seventies!! However I left her there as thought she looks too innocent and grandmaesque and so would be the type to pull out a sorn off shotgun from her flowery handbag. I am not even kidding.

    Rarely these days.
The last 2 we picked up were German tourists on a cycling holiday. One of the bikes was broken & they were trying to get to a bike shop. So we gave them a lift into Kiama :)

Hundreds if not thousands of times. Many, many good experiences and even made a few friends, worst thing that's happened? A strange smell that took a week to get out of the car. o_O

  15. Yes and yes. Broke down in Germany once adown near Belsen and needed to get to Hamburg - stuck my thumb out and the guy who picked me up was going to Hamburg. He also picked up a rather tasty German girl who promptly fell asleep on my shoulder in the back. she smelled very nice.......I digress. Picked up a few and been to a good few places for free (ta peeps).

Once hitched to see a young lady I was having a fling with (different life), got a lift off a guy who I got on pretty well with and obviously he became aware of where I was going and why. Well blow me down but about a month later I bumped into the very same guy at the other end of the country when I was with me steady girlfriend at the time. That conversation was awkward with me trying to steer the conversation away from the reason for our previous meeting. "so is this the bit of fluff I gave you a lift to Southend to shag" - fortunately wasnt said but that might have been a life changer;)

  16. Ah yes - I also had a habit of hitching in greens (combats) as ex squadies will always pick up one of their own!

  17. Yes and yes, hitchhiked when I was about 14 on a cycling holiday in the isle of man, needed a lift to Douglas to get dinner and bits for my bike, a lovely lady picked me up... Her Renault 5 smelled of strawberry!

I spent a lot of time driving from J23 M5 to Bristol and back commuting to work... About ten years, so in the time I have lost count of the number of people I have picked up from gordano services junction! When its sunny and then people are nice, I have even ended up going further down the motorway than I needed just to get them a bit closer to where they want to get.... Most of the people I have picked up are pretty down to earth and good people... And its all good karma :)

  18. I do miss those people who used to stand on slip roads with a piece of cardboard telling you you are on the right road:). Never had much joy hitching. Looking like I do I don't blame em for passing by avoiding any eye contact.
Always pick em up. If they look a bit dodgey I just out wierd them

  19. deff.yes, its interesting ,I even had the >once I pulled to a stop the dude got a huge pile of cases from bushes routine, another time I picked up a bloke who was up for armed robbery ,he was alright and introduced me to some nice helpful people, and I never drive past "platers"

  20. Only on a few occasions usually when been out walking or climbing. Most notable was in the Pyrenees three of us (a marine, para and me - relevant because not only was the trip a chance to compete on walking speed but also size of kit being carried) got picked up by a young couple in a Renault 5. Three of us squeezed in the back with two large rucksacks and the other ended up on the lap of the couple in front.

Have picked up other climbers and walkers
