How do you remove a firewall -( 1972 ) 1600 upright ?

I have google searched for a good link on how to do this and have found a few but all of them are vague in some aspect or other , i guess there is a lot reposting without the poster ever actually doing the job ?

    so here are my questions

1 - Do you have to remove the engine ( i have read NO !) is this true ?

2 - if no to the above do you have to remove the fan shrouding ?

3 - where are the two screws that everyone misses ?

4 - is the access to the tank/ fuel breather filler pipes made much easier by removing the firewall ?

I know it is easier to remove the engine but mine is running ok and once i take it out i will start messing as usual and probably end up doing stuff to it i don't want to atm ( painting etc ) .

Thank you in advance to all the good citizens of tlb who reply to this

  2. Engine out and the two hidden screws are underneath and normally corroded in place
Its impossible to replace the breathers without removing the firewall

  3. ^what Para said. Engine out. You'll have access to everything. And you can clean your tank and change the fuel sender ;)

  4. impossible ,thought you can cut the top...:D

Ok thanks - i have located holes where i think the two screws below the firewall should be , hopefully someone will tell me where they are supposed to be so that i am sure they are indeed already out .

I have read on numerous samba posts that it can be removed without taking the engine out and i have read this in the haynes too !

soz just hoping someone has experience of doing this

  7. You can remove the firewall with the engine still in if you have a type 4 engine although its a pain
You cant do it with a type one engine in

As lef says you can cut a hole from inside the bus over the top of the tank and change them that way

Id drop the engine and do it properly and as snotty said you can inspect and clean the tank

  8. Look up at the firewall from under the bus, the 2 screws are visible either side of the gearbox, and are vertical.

As has been said, by removing either the fuel injection, or carbs on a type 4 engine, it is possible to get the firwall out, but it is a pain, fairly sure its not easy without major cutting on a type 1 engine.

Im suprised noone has made a firewall with a removable panel to get round this, so the flat part can be removed, and is held on with screws and anchor nuts, or quick release fasteners!!

i have done exactly this and see two holes where i think a screw should be either side of the gb and directly below the fw lip , thanks

  10. it probably is possible but by the time youve taken everything off the engine to get clearance it would be quicker to take the engine out. then you can do all pipes, paint the firewall and tank . check the clutch and valve clearances, put new gaskets on and so on so i the long run saves time.

Probably right Daz but as i say i have just got her running sweet and i love well painted shiny bits and just know i would be degreasing and painting rather than driving it so was reluctant to do this , i read you can take the doghouse off and get the firewall out on the samba site , but wondered if anyone on here had actually done it !

So how much work is involved if i were to take the blower shrouding off ?

  13. More work than dropping the engine and more chance of making it run worse afterwards

  14. not tried it myself but there looks enough clearance to lift the fan shroud out but only after removing the alternator, oil filler carb and manifold, all the wiring and throttle cable.
lots of fiddly bolts there not to mention getting the throttle cable back through

  15. Just take the engine out...;)
