How good was your first road legal car and what was it?

  1. Prom6.jpg Mine was a 1936 Morris 8 Tourer that I bought in 1964 from a fellow student for £12/10s. Battery was always flat so dynamo was probably knackered. I transported various girls around thinking I was cool, until one said it was like being in a pram . Only had it for about 3 months when I lent it to my digs mate Terry and showing off to his gf , he went over a level crossing at 60 mph ( basically flat out) and broke the rear springs (subsequently held up by blocks of wood). He later borrowed it and broke the steering hitting a gate post so it was the end of it - sold as scrap for 10/- - photo outside digs in Liverpool with Terry acting daft as usual.

When Top Gear interviewed celebrities for their 'Star in a Reasonably Priced Car' segment, one of the questions was 'what was your first car?'

When they did Freddie Flintoff, before he presented the show (and rearranged his face and caused it to get shelved), they asked him this, he said 'a new Porsche Boxter'! Pretty cool for a first car, he blagged it from a sponsor.

Mine was very boring: my Dad gave me his 5 year old Austin Maxi 1750 as the dealers paid him not to part ex it against an new Metro 1.3S - look that up, it's so rare I'm sure that there aren't any left. It served me well as a postgrad student commuting between Bedford and Cranfield, and then around Sheffield with trips to Newcastle. I resprayed it, badly, and had to fix the crank oil seal, but otherwise it was surprisingly good. I bought a rough 1966 MGB roadster which broken down everytime I drove it for about a month until I fixed most things except the chronically low oil pressure, and badly fitting fibreglass wings. Sold them both to buy the Droopsnoot Firenza:).

I’m sure Kenneth More drives something like that in the Douglas Barder film reach for the skies. It was certainly a coupe with suicide doors. I always imagined myself in one as a kid!

It's an MG M-Type but I believe the windscreen is from a Morris 8 tourer.

Jarvis body. That would explain the suicide doors!

Blimey DocJohn, I fixed up one of those for Mrs Ozziedog many many moons back. If it was the same one, it was called a 1300S if I remember correctly. This one was black and had been run ragged so got it for next to nothing down the ring and gave it a bit of a refurb. I’ve never ever seen another one, fairly rapid for its size and that point in time.

Ozziedog,,,,,,,,,wonder what happened to it :)

My very first car was an EH Holden station wagon. 64 I think. Absolutely rusted from ear to ear. I bought it for two hundred dollars and spent a month or two getting a roadworthy certificate on it so I could put it in my name as was the deal back then. It had a 179 C.I. straight six red engine in it that was absolutely clapped out. Chap up the road had a souped up 161 for sale and i popped that in but it was still very stayed until I put on the twin carbs and a bit of an extractor system then it went well. Three up the tree but couldn’t afford a four speed box, as they were rocking horse stuff and mucho dinero. Wide wheels and hammered out the back arches with a car jack and a hammer. Loads of ideas me but none of them any good, much like today really. Painted it in primer grey outside and metallic bronze inside. Those Cal Custom spray cans were well expensive and didn’t go very far, it was two cans per door so the outside never got painted. But it went well, i had wide steelies, a tiny little eensy weensy steering wheel, bench seat , primer grey and foamed up surf bars for our boards.:)

Ozziedog,,,,,,,,we did indeed live the dream :cool::cool:

Here ya go fellas , this is pretty much what mine was like and this was its original colour, just imagine it looking a bit tougher in primer grey and a pair of foamed up surf bars on the roof for the boards.

Just gone off to dream about some more E.H. Stuff. All these old Holdens are fetching a zillion bucks each corner. I’ve tried to find a nice old Honda 90 to shove in the corner of the garage and use it to zoom up the shops three times a year,,,,,,,
    HOW MUCH !!!

Ozziedog,,,,,,,I’ll be walking up the shops I think:)

Im with you on the Honda 90! I thought I’d get one for nipping out on but they’re a bit costly nowadays! They used to be cheap when it was folk using them to get to work, or the allotment.

Even stuff that no one wanted (apart from me) are expensive , Puch Maxi’s etc :(
