Should be able to get to it without jack. I hate having to get under the van as we have a gravel drive. Remind me to get a flat with a concrete drive next time.

  3. but on Avengers bus ,are they all the same re the very awkward bolt? yknow the very awkward bolt!

Do you mean rusty and unreliable?

The Avenger, you might find all that's needed is to tighten up, or renew the spade connector.

  6. urrrrm what when your laying underneath and you cant find what your after.

  7. Thanks Zed, I will have another go tomorrow. I bought 27 amp cable, if I fit the relay will that be rated high enough?

More than. Look at the weedy cable VW put on the spade when you get under.

  9. Cheers, I'll try and have another go tonight. I'm planning to take the 12v feed straight from the battery rather than the post on the starter so it will be a bit longer run of cable.

In which case, fit the relay in the engine compartment?
Personally, I think the less spaghetti attached directly to the battery, the better...

  11. Fair comment mate, yes in the engine compartment just thought it would keep it out of the weather and make it easier to swap out if it failed without crawling underneath! Going to fit a 20 amp fuse - will that be ok?
    Cheers.

As zed has said clean the terminals

    I would add
clean or replace the terminals at the starter
clean or replace the terminals at the back of the ing switch

Fit a relay if you must but if you do the above and still have issues my money would be on the solenoid on the starter on its way out.

If you do want to fit a relay there is a good how too but 20amp will be fine

  14. Fuse is optional (according to the hot start 'how to' on here) and I can vouch for that. Mines been on for about a year now with no fuse, but I'm sure if you fit a fuse it won't hurt.

  15. Matty beat me. Ill shut up now (as usual) :D

  16. Thanks again for all your kind help. Starter and solenoid replaced a year ago and all connections cleaned, new earth straps also fitted. Originally told the problem was due to a faulty starter/solenoid but continued to have the problem after they were replaced. As I've already said she started first turn of the key throughout the Winter and right up to the start of this current spell of warm weather. Accept it could still be a duff (new) starter but I'll put money on her starting first turn tomorrow morning but after the drive to work unless it is significantly cooler she will be a bugger to start at lunch time.

  17. Well, still not done the job but as I suspected since the weather has been cooler this week its been back to starting first time every time. Looks like it may be getting warmer again though so really ought to try and fit the relay this weekend. Going to borrow a trolley jack and axle stands so I can get underneath easier. A meet up with some local chaps would be good if anyone is up for it.

  18. Job now completed.:)

  20. So far so good, went to Halfords which was a common place to break down but she started first turn.
