I've gone for a scooby stage 2 EJ20 conversion. Should be about 150 - 160 bhp depending on ECU map!
    What did you go for?
    The new engine gang rocks!

  2. Nice!

I've gone for a bog standard 1600 twinport recon. Tin is off at the powdercoaters, and I have treated it to a fancy stainless exhaust

I was saying the other day that if I had a less original van I'd be tempted to go tdi, but it'd be a shame to hack mine about to make something like that fit.

I don't think it'll be all done by next weekend so I've probably got a t4 to borrow for vanwest

Nothing at all gets cut for the scooby conversion so really easy to put back to stock. Not sure if there are any off the shelf diesel conversions yet though.
When are you likely to have yours back on the road?

  4. That's interesting, I don' really know anything about subaru's. Do you have to change the gearbox too?

Could be end of next week, but more likely the week after, Tin's due back thurs or friday and exhaust mid week.

no sense rushing anything now. I've still got to finish repairing and refit the air filter stand I chopped out a couple of years ago when I decided twin carbs was a good idea (it wasn't). And the engine bay could do with a scrub and polish up too.

You didn't get on with the twin carbs then?
Easiest Subaru conversion are the EJ20, EJ22 and EH25. 2 litre, 2.2 and 2.5. The EJ20 is the most popular as it offers power and improved economy over a standard type 1. The EJ25 is bloody good fun but more expensive and thirsty as hell!
I've got a 5 rib box so going to see how I get in with that. Should be fine as most people stick with the 3 rib stock box without problems. I suppose he best would be a 6 rib 009 from a 2 litre but they're either hard to get or stupid money for an unknown one.
I haven't seen your bus for years!

  6. I bought them pre-loved and we couldn't get them to run right on my old engine. I stuck them in a cupboard and got a good original solex carb on. In fairness though, my engine's been a pain in the neck for the last couple of years so the twins might well be fine. Might giver them another try over the winter when there's no time pressures.

It's about 6 weeks until I'm supposed to be going to Holland and Germany for my holiday so not risking anything now. Ideally I'll have got some miles on it, run it in and got the first service done before I go.

not sure if you've seen it since this, is that yours behind it?

Carl1974, no body mods needed to the van.
Rad sits up between main chassis rails with a stainless scoop underneath. 2 thermostat controlled fans above to draw air if necessary.

  11. The engine is trying to tell you to stay indoors and get yourself well for some serious fun!

  12. I'm betting the problem is to do with the full flow and the engine brace bar...

  14. Have a look here, there are some photos of my EJ20 engine install:

The only mods to the body are where the rad bolts to the chassis rails, strengthening plates are welded in. I went for an 091 gearbox: fortunately I'd already bought one and it was languishing in the corner of the garage. I painted it up, did an oil change on it, and in it went.
