Little by little... doing bits I can at home before heading to the workshop. I forget how quiet it is here and how noisy my angle grinder is! Oops
Perhaps I shouldn't mention this...but did someone drill four extra holes on the front of your pedal pan? I'll get me coat...
a couple of gallons of cheap vinegar in a baby bath ,ye could leave stuff to strip. the acid in it does some job
More scraping of underseal tonight. Towards the back there’s definitely more rust than paint in places And my fuel line from the tank needs changing too. Eek! The wiring loom rubber is leaking water! How did it get in there? No wonder the metal sheath was rotten. Bit more cleaning of old wax oil
No workshop time this weekend but I’ve brought some homework back again. The neighbours are going to love me!
I think by techenders my head will be perpetually facing skywards and my arms trailing in the floor. Ouch
Impressive Bug loading skills on display there! Great progress, btw, shame about the lack of weekend workshop time, tho your arms and neck may thank you for the rest.
some times grit blasting is the only /best way .......either a local company or a portable unit ......generally not that expensive to have something grit blasted and powdercoated
you'd be amazed how much i've got in and on that bug over the years I rarely use under the bonnet for anything other than tools and spares.
there is a little spray sand blaster at the workshop, once i've removed as much as i can get too (rust and underseal) i'll be blasting the underside of the bus before degreasing and hydrate 80. there is a sandblasting place near the workshop but i can only get there evenings and weekends when they're closed
Noisy things put away before the neighbours turned ugly Some git slapped a lot of underseal on this But it’s scraping off quite well. Phew.
not all of it was solid, mostly around edges, but i need to get to any lurking rust beneath and treat it. also, i'm thinking of doing it all in white epoxy mastic...
If you wire brush with the angle grinder brush, that then the the zinc primer will stick fine, then you can then put the white mastic on top It's easy to get carried away, but the chap at Dynax said this was the dog's doodads' solution for the Bug's floorpan.
oh... he told me to use hydrate 80 first and that also makes a good base for the mastic but i presume he meant where there were more rusty bits. the undersides of the pans are pure surface rust. I didn't buy any of their zinc primer but do have some - anything i do to it is going to be better than it was and mean i won't have to do this for at least another 46 years, right?
Can't imagine the wire brush and your thoroughness leaving much rust, apart from where you can't get into. The Bug's floorpan came up a treat with my trusty Bosch, all the way back to bare metal Let's hope our VW last as long as we can drive them, I'll drink a beer to that.
