Steering idler pin replacement

  1. The replacements are split bushes, so don't need reaming.

  2. I brought one of those tools and I did mine at tekenders last september, I used Zeds method and the tool made it easy to remove and refit the bushes worth every penny, no reaming needed, don't forget to take the grease nipple out :)

  3. That's what I thought, but heritage say they should be done.

  4. Zed

    Zed Gradually getting grumpier

split bushes negate the need, the originals were different I'd guess? They are rubbish though, not tight enough.

  5. I can vouch for the pin removal/replacement tool that pyroking and Greenwesty mention - I bought one from the same chap last year, very well made and easy to use, it even ensures the top of the pin sticks up by 1mm so the cap clips on OK.

I see they are now £25 ........ but still worth the money IMHO. Whole job from jacking up to lowering back to the ground took 50 mins.

  6. I'm hoping I'll actually get a chance to use it today...seems the rest of life has been getting in the way!

  7. Snuck outside at lunchtime and removed the current pin...and found out the reason for the grease explosion - most of the seals are missing and those present weren't installed correctly
waiting for the dirt to loosen while I work the afternoon away then back underneath for some serious cleaning!

  8. For anyone watching the thread, that tool I bought is the mutt's nuts! Quite tough to wind out the old bushes, but a breeze to set the new ones in place!

  9. 50 minutes ???? Jeez f**k me, it took me about two days to get the stubborn things out. Jammed solid they were.....

  10. I got the bushes out and new ones in within about 40 minutes...but it took me almost another hour of effing and jeffing to get the bolt back into the relay arm - no matter how much I *thought* I had the slot lined up, I couldn't get the threads engaged!

  11. You beat me on the bush and pin replacement - but I did have a cuppa and a biscuit in the middle of the job (we built an empire on tea and biscuits). I have to confess I had to replace the rely arm entirely due to so much corrosion in the pinch bolt thread I couldn't get it to tighten up - in fact my own wandering steering was finallly down to this item, having replaced just about everything else that was replaceable including the rubber disc as he bottom of the steering column!

  12. My 40 minutes was for replacing the bushes only...it took me 3 days in total between jacking it up and dropping it down ;)
It's a shame that the day job gets in the way!

  13. Are we going to have a special TLB prize for whoever changes their pin the quickest :)?

  14. Having a second person to wobble the steering wheel is a big help when putting the lock bolt back through the pitman arm!!

  15. Could someone confirm for me please - do I need to get my tracking re-set after I've changed my idler pin? I'm guessing I don't, however would like it confirmed.

Have got my idler pin kit arriving tomorrow and have got one of those tools for easy removing/fitting the bushes off eBay and so hope to do it over the weekend.

    Thanks.

  16. I wouldn't imagine it'll affect the tracking.

  17. I was going by Bentley who mentioned nothing of tracking after replacement...

  18. If you've been fiddling with the track rods, maybe, but changing the pin wouldn't think'll alter anything.

  19. Thanks for the replies and confirming my assumption that it shouldn't affect the tracking.

  20. Oh, and good luck ;)
