think it could be the wiring. not getting 12v at the coil. i tried running a wire from the + terminal to the + on the coil, and got 12v t the coil then, but it still wouldnt spark, all i ended up doing was burning my hand on the battery earth strap, which cant be good.. any thoughts? im a bit sick of it now, think im just going to buy a whole new loom and start again. who's done this, any recommendations on where to get the loom from?
Does it do this when you disconnect the original (black) cable to the coil +? Try it again with the old cable disconnected. It sounds like your ignition switch wiring is shorted to ground somewhere, which is causing a lot of current to be pulled from the battery.
If it still wouldn't spark with a connection from the coil straight to the battery, the problem doesn't sound like the wiring. Points or Electronic? Edit - Ha-ha, one of us is right @snotty
For the cost of putting in a new loom and the amount of time and effort you might as well get someone to look at it ( having looked into it herself) ......................................
Who will it be, eh ? I reckon someone's previously burnt out mr kona's ignition wiring, which is now shorted to the body somewhere. Direct link to the battery with the old supply lead still in place: many amperes flow...
I was thinking he's fried his electronic ignition. You might be right - usually the black 12V wire to the coil is all melty when that's happened.
yeah para, points are new and working fine/got the correct gap etc.. tried it with the old cable to the coil off, still nout spark wise. Row has a good point, il try and get in touch with BCC again this week before spending all ny cash. a new loom is definitely necessary in the not to distant future though, as the wiring throughtout is balls. got 3 fuseboxes and trying to find out what goes where has been a nightmare!

If: You have a wire connected direct from the battery and the gearbox is earthed to the chassis with it's earth strap and there is no spark, it must be a problem with the coil, you said it's good I think? points - who knows, there have been some dodgy points about. distributor, what's to go wrong? condensor, worth a shout HT leads, King lead fault would stop all sparkage or spark plugs, unlucky if they're all dud. You are resting the plug on the case I assume...
I've seen Jayk's wiring. "Dodgy" is an understatement; under the dash looks like the national grid....
yeah, im certain the coil is good, its been in 3 buses recently and worked fine.. the points are brand new, changed them for a new set today, even though id changed them last month for new ones.. was trying everything. dont see how the dizzy could have gone wrong... havent changed the condenser lately, although this one is no more than 3 month old... HT leads i got recently off para, and have tried 4 king leads in the past few days just to be sure... i have changed the plugs aswell, may change them back for the old ones and try them as they worked before... and doug is right! haha
Have you checked continuity on the wire to your coil, if that's dodgy then run a new wire fella? New looms are expensive and you might be able to find out where the wires broken? If its in the engine bay or near the front they're generally easy to replace. Just have to check at intervals. Time and patience my friend.....
I've seen many buses with wiring like that, but in every case it was additional and now redundant wiring for stereo's, horns, alarms, electric washers etc, left there and added to by successive owners. I take the windscreen out and the top off the dash then pull it out bit by bit until just the original loom is left. When you can see what you're doing it's quite easy. Alarm:
I disconnected mine, a 72/73, so you can imagine how many diagrams I went through! Turns out that the only wire I'd plugged wrong was the interior light but then again that was the cause of my battery draining! It's not hard and its nt giving in if you fix or add a wire fella, just ensure it's the same colour as you're replacing
mate i dont think colour is remotely relevant in my bus.. engine bay includes loads of really bright UV-esque wires, it looks like a rave in there... if i replaced the wires with the same colour as the one i was replacing, id almost definitely be doing it wrong! heres a tiny amount of what im trying to figure out.. although the pic seems to make it look a lot better than it actually is.. and thats after several days of tracing wires back, removing useless crap, and getting highly irritated by the whole thing..
If that's what you're dealing with, I'd put a new loom in. It doesn't look like a total abortion, but you'd never know what was what. I'd expect looms over the years to be much the same. Any missing bits you could add using stuff from Vehicle Wiring Products, etc. A Bay loom's pretty simple.
Yeah, that was what i was thinking too.. its just rubbish. so instead of fannying about with it forever just replace it all... plus if i do that i can relocate the fusebox back to its original place, and be able to put my kick panels in to hide the messiness..
