WANTED Type 4 Thermostat, cooling flaps and all linking parts.

While reading lots on this forum to learn more about my van and engine I discovered something depressing yesterday - the thermostat and all linking parts have been completely removed from my van.

I have managed to prise open the cylinder cover enough on the nearside (left) to see that it looks like that cooling flap is actually still in there and sat down against the oil cooler (which I believe is the best position when the thermostat isn't working), however I was unable to see whether the cooling flap from the other side is still in place - I'm doubtful if it is as I believe that flap is attached to the top rod that goes across the engine between the flaps and that rod is definitely missing.

So, I'm looking for pretty much all the parts for the thermostat and flap mechanism and so if anyone has any of the parts spare please could you let me know what and how much you want for them.

I think I need pretty much everything in this picture except for no. 31. - thermostat, bracket + fixing bolts, cable, doller/pully + fixing bolts, top bar + fixings + spring, right flap, connector between left flap and bar etc.



I know the thermostat (with modifications!) and cable are still available from various sources, however I've not been able to track any of the other parts down.

Assuming I can get hold of all these parts, could anyone also tell me whether this is a job that can be done without taking the engine out? Can the cylinder covers be taken off with the engine in place?

Thanks Paul I searched on eBay and the only thermostat related thing I found was a mounting bracket - didn't spot those - from the title on that one I should start searching for related things rather than what I actually need!

Am thinking £20 might be an OK price just so I know I've got one...

I can sort you a bracket and wheel... thermostat and cable are available from vw heritage (type 1 thermostat)

Those flaps on eBay were open to offers and so have made an offer on one.

Do you know if fitting all this can be done with the engine in? e.g. can you take the cylinder cover tin off with the engine in place?

I may have the oil cooler side flap available which I brought from a member on here but subsequently got the whole kit from elsewhere.

Edit, just read you have this part still. Ignore me!

 

you should be able to get the tin off... might be a bit of a fiddle, but I'm pretty sure do-able

 

Sharpey - how much do you want for the oil cooler side flap? Am pretty sure mine is in there, but no idea on codition or of the damaged it when removing the rest of it and so probably worth me getting a spare in case. Did it have any of the hinge/brackety bits with it?

Providing that my order has all it's bits (unfortunately now stuck in the Post Office sorting office til Wednesday), you can have it for £7 including P&P.

If any of you are coming to tekenders i'll be attempting a full reinstall of flaps rods thermo and cable etc with bottom tins - without the aid of a safety net and hopefully with the engine in........









if i can be arsed.

 

I reinstalled mine with the engine in, had to remove a few bits of tin and had to pull up the two big tins with spark plug holes and managed to get it in.

 

Rickyrooo - please can you take lots of photos and keep a note of any tricky bits. Good luck!

If someone has all the bits, any chance they could take a photo of it all so that I know exactly what I need to get?? Am taking the ratwell microfiche picture as a guideline, but nothing better than pics of the real parts.
