  1. Do I have to do anything to get the excess tax refunded? Will I get a letter after the end of the month?

    Ta :)

You have to send the V5 off with the taxation class changed to “historic” (assuming the registration date is correct, and it is exempt). You’ll then get an automatic refund for any remaining tax (whole months only) after the date of application.
They don’t automatically change you to historic.

  3. Mines sorn at the moment
Can I just fill the log book in as historic and send it off or does it have to be taxed insured and motd before I can do that?

Also as mine was imported it shows the date of first registration as 1984 I take it that’s going to cause me problems?

It does say on the green slip for new keepers declared manufactured 1978

They’ll want some sort of official dating doc.
There’s an email address on here somewhere that’ll send you something foc within a couple of weeks.

I posted the details on here about 2 years ago when I did Cyril. The VW museum in Germany will send you a declaration for free in a couple of weeks or u can go for the official birth certificate which costs a lot n takes ages.
Message me if you can’t find my thread n I’ll have a look later

Might be worth phoning them first, explain that it's an import and the date of registration is wrong and see what they say.
You may need the birth cert for it, mine was 90euro's from here, took over 3 months to arrive though. Not sure how else you will prove it's age.

EDIT - I didn't need it for historic status, just a post office with a member of staff that knew what they were doing.

VW will email you pretty much the same stuff for free. It was only taking about 2 weeks fairly recently.

    I don’t have a printer you see.

  12. My advice is to avoid going through the DVLA as they are beyond useless and find a Post Office that knows what they are doing. Ours is an import, built December 1975 but not registered here until 2003, admittedly it took 3 Post Offices until I found a competent one but it was still better than the 6 months I wasted going to the DVLA:(

  13. Did you have to give the post office a proof of age

My log book was the same as yours @paradox its got manufactured in 1978. so in theory the DVLA know that. i didn't need any other paper work when i changed it

  15. Nope it said manufactured in 1975 on the V5 so the bloke in the Post Office said OK and said he'd give it a go. Lo and behold it worked

I found that the DVLA wouldn't do it, just kept referring me to the post office. Eventually found a women behind the counter who persevered and taxed it as historic and kept half of the log book. Mine was mot'd at the time, I was taxing it at the time.
