  1. Read in an English paper today about a really snowy winter! They say(as they do) that its going to be a really cold and icy winter.
Do you guys in the UK use winter or studded tyres?
I owned a van when i lived in Norway and when i bought it i drove from Trondheim to Stavanger over the Dovre mountains in the beginning of December, lucky it had a Eberspaucher and good winter tyres, was a cool drive!

The press are really on one with the weather at the moment remember the storm to beat the great storm of 86 a few weeks ago.
Ignore it and look on proper weather sites and its going to get a bit colder but nothing out of the norm for this time of year weather people struggle to get a week ahead let alone a whole season so dont know how the press can predict that far ahead

As for winter tyres no one bothers as if the weather is that bad the country just grinds to a stop and we all moan about it then go sledging with the kids

  3. Nice! Here in sweden nothing stops! Suppose we are used to it!

  4. I've driven Stavanger to Mo-I-Rana, that's scary!

  5. Wasnt scary at all, winter driving is fun,as long as its on snow, good grip actually, its when the roads are icey that is dodgy.

  6. Thats our problem - not usually enough snow. If they didnt salt it it would help! (really?)

  8. They should stop salting roads and make it compulsory to use proper winter tyres.
All that salt is pollution and the logistics and cost of spreading it is enormous!
Ive stopped using pigged tyres and the technology of new winter tyres are truly amazing!

Looks like these harsh winters are getting more common so maybe some lessons need to be learned from the Scandinavians?
Did you know that normal summer tyres under 6 degrees dont work as good as the winter tyres with softer rubber compound? I fit my winter tyres/rims when the min temps hit 6 degrees.
Busmonkey are u an RC addict too? I am!

  9. We have a set of winter tyres mounted on a set of rims for my wife's car and I'm going to be swapping the wheels over this weekend. The tyres we have are M+S rated (mud + snow) and the compound is designed to work best at temperatures below 7 degrees. We use them every winter and they're very useful - give much more grip than standard tyres. We haven't got winters for every car, but at least we know we can still get around.

  10. Can't predict the weather with any accuracy more than 7 days, anyone who claims they can best give me the lottery numbers. The models used in meteology are based on past weather patterns and seeing as the weather is now like nothing we ve had before in terms of general behaviour these models are obsolete. Open the curtains, look out the window, there's nowt tha can do about it.
My mates bro lives in Canada and he says for the 1st fortnight of snow its like being back here with folks pranging all over the shop untill they get used to it.
Winter tires? No need if there's plenty of tread and you drive as the condititions permit.

  11. Granted, a lot of the problems are caused because people can't drive properly anymore and just rely on their ABS and traction control to get them out of trouble, but there comes a point where it doesn't matter how talented a driver you are, you aren't going to be able to deal with the conditions without winter tyres.

Our winters are starting to get more severe (after years of not even having any snow) and I think we can learn a lot from countries that have had cold winters for a long time.

  12. Ive never had winter tyres but am considering them this year. I normally just dont drive in it. Also its not just your own driving but everyone elses you need to worry about.
One year I got a lift home in the snow with a colleague (aka boy racer) who still drove like a ***** even in the thick snow because according to him it was fine because he 'had a decent car' (it was a golf) It was along a coast road near the edge of a cliff and I genuinely thought we were going to die.
He was still speeding and overtaking.

  13. When I had my impreza I used to drive like that in the snow and ice....Somerset levels... Snow.... 4wd :)

  14. Snows never stopped me, unless it was too deep of course; its always been other drivers who can't cope with the conditions. I had the advantage of living on the moors, only had one of the farmers plough the roads, no salt. You soon learn or its your motor through a wall or not getting to work and not getting paid.

I got winter tyres on my transit work van,all year 'round.Very good for all conditions really.

  16. The issue with my car is weight distribution, type of tyres, wheels and torque. 2 litre TDCi with alloys and low profile (ish) tyres = wide. Its an absolute pig!!! The wifes Saxo is a doddle to drive as is the van so strangely come fresh snow I use the bus. When it gets slushy I put it away as its rusty enough already!

Like driving the bus in the snow, the colder the better!!

  17. My first proper winter driving was in Sweden, Linkoping to Karlskoga. In a 4x4 Skoda Octavia with studded winter tyres. Couldn't resist a quick trip into the woods on the way, drifting and bouncing off the snow banks. It was a great laugh.

I then had a hoon around on a frozen lake in Karlskoga.

It was great. The first thing I do here when it snows is fire up the van and out for a bit of drifting. :) if people here actually learned how to drive their cars as opposed to make it get from a to b we wouldn't have the problems we experience in the winter time. Everyone here just panics, slows down too much, stops using outside lanes in the motorways etc, then the weather wins

I can't wait to get the crewcab out in the snow
    :)
