It,ll be the daily express - the've a fixation on reporting imminent bad weather normally getting it totally wrong

  3. Agreed, why they bother salting is beyond me. We should have the winter tyre laws now as we've had 3 harsh (for the UK) on the bounce. All of Scandinavia and Central Europe mandate winter tyres and you're right, the technology has really moved on so they don't always have to be studded
    :)

  6. I drive a 2010 legacy wagon boxer diesel and through the years i have owned 37 cars, the subaru is without a doubt the best 4x4 system around, had a merc ml too and the subie is still better than that,i also play in parking lots drifting and practicing evasive control of the car, good fun and its saved me a few times.
One winter i drove on a road which was covered in an inch thick layer of black ice in an escort with super thin studded tyres and i did a full 360 and just carried on driving, sounds fun? Not really as it was not planned! Change of underwear needed after that time.
Most people make the mistake in winter when trying to avoid a car by braking heavily, keep off the brakes, gear down and gently swerve to go around the the car.
When it snows or gets icey i suggest practicing in safe areas to know the limits of your car.

  13. Winter tyres are for winners.

Anyone that slags winter tyre off as being a waste of time/money has never tried them.
    This is a fact.

  14. @Dicky why do you have a row boat hinged to the top of your van?

  15. I agree winter tyres would be good except for, Most peoples driving in this country is crap when the suns out yet alone a bit of snow. They have no foresight to think oh, a hill covered in snow and ice, I will wait for the car in front to get up then get a bit of a run up etc. Then when matey in front stops as the car in front of him has stopped etc Everyone is now stuck on a hill covered in snow and ice. Winter tyres or not you can't drive round them all cos of the oncoming traffic. Anymore than 1mm. give up lol

Most of the rest of the world also have a meaningful driving test.
If its a bit foggy here they cancel your test.....

  17. Actually, my favourite moment with winter tyres involved just that:

Last winter, I was following an Alpha Romeo in my wife's Fiesta (which had winter tyres). He was going fine in the snow with his normal tyres until he reached a hump-back bridge, and ground to a halt, with me stopping just a few feet behind him on the up slope. Paused for a minute, and it became obvious he wasn't going anywhere, because he'd started to do what most people do when they get stuck and frustrated, and he was wheelspinning madly and turning the wheel, so he was wiggling from side to side but going nowhere. I just pulled off gently in first, drove around him and looked at the classic expression on his face in my rear view mirror as I buggered off over the crest of the bridge and down the other side. :D
