wiper spindle seals

  1. my wiper spindles have no seals on them, can they be fitted from outside? will i have to remove wiper motor linkage etc?

also, the spindles seem loose to me as if the linkage inside is not fixed properly, is this normal? do the spindle seals hold the spindles firm as well as blocking the hole?
the wipers work fine by the eay, well they would if they had electric in them

  2. You can fit the seal with the wipers in place... it's a pig of a job, and I recommend using masking tape so you don't gouge the paint with the flat bladed screw driver that you have to use to tease the seals in with...

As for the looseness, it sounds like you're also missing the washers, nuts, and spindle nut covers....

That should cover it all :)

  3. cheers paul. they have got some nuts/washers on but i check to see if theyre missing any mote

  4. This is what I got, apart from the spindle seals does it look right or am I missing bits? Base cap??
Looks like a metal nut on inside, then on outside - rubber washer, metal washer, nut, wiper arm. I think.

looks like you need to tighten the nuts up on the outside, fit new seals it may help preserve that new headlamp bowl ;)

  6. Oh hello David, my nuts tighten up automatically when you post a reply. Don't go changing:)

  7. looks like you need new seals... that'll rectify the slop

Try them out and watch if the outer bit and nut turns with the inner bit, i.e. seized up - I bet they do, it's usually why they end up loose...

  9. will inspect this when its all hooked up to the national grid again. cheers

  12. finally got a proper look at my wipers, does anybody know where i can get Number 3 on this pic?

This is pic of post 73 vans, mine is 79.
Can't find the part on the usual sites, they all just have a normal nut, which I don't need. Maybe the setup they show are for pre 73 vans?
    Here's what I've got

On the inside is the notched round nut(?) shown in the top diagram

So from the scuffs on the paint the whole thing is turning instead of just the middle part. You need to dismantle and free it up.

  14. That'll be a motor out job then?
Is the notched circle on the sleeve supposed to locate into something to prevent it turning, do you know?

  15. no, that's just a adjustable collar...

As for item 3, that is now the washer that I linked to earlier!! :)

If you perseverve you can get the centre of the spindles out from under the dash.

  17. Ok, by eck it's confusing! Two different exploded views in Bentley....

The way my patience is going of late that won't happen then!

    Many thanks as always

It's not that hard really. ;) Remove small circlip from outside, twist a screwdriver to pop the joint under the dash and pull it out. Try and get some unsiezing suff worked in if it's badly stuck but aim to get the centre right out so you can clean it up properly or it'll stick again in a year or two

  19. whs^^^ If threaded bit turns when wipers are running then the inner will have seized to outer threaded sleeve sawing through grommet and slackening nuts on wiper rack causing slackness. you need to pull wiper rack and free up or replace the spindles

  20. when i did mine i had to use the hydrauic press to push the centres out even after a week in freeing oil! mind you it had been stood since 1995 :D
