Take the fuel pipe off going into the carb hold over a pot and get someone to crank to make sure you have fuel pumping through Sent from my SM-G975F using Tapatalk
Follow the green wire from the points to the condenser, and to the coil. Any breaks? Dropped of coil?
It will have flooded. Unless the points adjustment has finally drifted off. It may have just barely been running when you switched off. A 12 volt light from coil negative to ground should flash as you crank it. If not your points need tweaking or the condenser has failed.
have you got it running yet? pity for most checks on ignition and fuel you do need a second pair of hands
Same thing happened to me a couple of weeks ago due to it sitting around for so long Eventually it started and started stalling at junctions. I’m guessing carb needs stripping as the fuel ethanol has built up and clogged the jets. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Thats why I have a sneaky "sensor" wire that goes into some electronics, but conveniently has a bullet in-line connector right near the battery positive terminal. The other end of the wire goes to the spade terminal on the starter motor. If I need to do something with the engine that might involve it stopping and I need to fiddle to get it restarted, I turn on the ignition with the key, then unplug the bullet connector and tap it on the battery positive. And the engine cranks. To stop it, I pull the distributor wire off the coil making sure I dont touch any bare metal parts there - the connector has a shrouded body.
I’ve got a feeling it’s a problem with the fuse box. It’s had a new loom fitted abs I’ve got a more modern fuse box to put in but haven’t had a chance to yet as I can’t seem to find a basic common sense picture of the existing one with an explanation of what each wire does
So I fitted a new(old) fuse board and the bloody thing still wont start. Got someone coming over tomorrow to take a closer look so fingers crossed
Back to basics again then. Take a plug out & have a look at it, if it’s wet with fuel it’s either flooded or no spark. Connect the plug to the lead & earth it to the engine. Get someone to crank the engine while checking for a spark. No spark.... check for 12v at the black wire to the coil. If you have voltage there pop the dizzy cap off & check the points gap. If the gap is ok & still no spark it is probably worth changing the condenser. Got a spark & plug is wet with fuel, either flooded or has the timing slipped or the dizzy been moved? Have you fitted any new leads since it last ran? Got a spark & plug dry. Did you check fuel getting to the carb? If so might need to do a bit of carb disassembly to check for crud in the jets/float bowl. If you have checked all the above & still no joy might be worth getting a friendly old school mechanic to talk a look.
Try this. Pull air filter pipe off carb, put a eggcup of petrol straight down the throat. Push accelerator once and turn it over. I bet it fires and stops. Repeat until it’s running properly.
