1.6 twin port, awful smell

  1. Hi here's a picture of the alternator. The regulator is held in by 3 screws. Dave

  2. Are you talking about a regulator or internal diode pack (which is unlikely to have blown up). The internal regulators are readily available (see above).

  3. Disconnect the batt -ve, slacken the alt clamping strap, undo the 3 screws and take the top plate off. There should be a reg hiding under there.

  4. Hi, no. The top, visible part of the regulator is just a black plastic square held in with 3 screws. Thanks. Dave
Hi yes it does but the regulator is different to the one in the link

  5. Hi no, here's pic of mine. Thanks. Dave

  6. Ah. You might have an alt with just the diode pack in, and an external regulator. If the alt you installed (assume you replaced it) had no regulator anywhere, that might explain your cooked battery.

What is actually under that plate (I suspect nothing)?

  7. Hi the brushes are under the plate and the regulator seems to be in the plastic housing.

  8. this video shows the regulator and brush assembly.

  9. Did you have an external regulator before? Must have done.

There looks like some bodgery there.
Theres a black wire coming out the side as well as the warning light wire ..
Maybe its internal regulator broke, so an external regulator has been bodged in..the black wire would be DF .

And then thats been removed and now you have no regulator..

You probably should just fit an internal regulator as people suggest rather than worrying about what it looks like..

  12. That would be best, if the plate can accommodate an internal reg. Does sound like a bit of the bodgery came adrift, and the alt was running with a reg. That would likely cook the battery nicely.

  13. Hi again. I have an new external regulator (pic attached) but no wiring diagram. Does anyone know how I might connect this to the 2 terminals on the al82n alternator?

    Hope this helps, the regulator...

...looks like it's down t'other end (circled in red)... or at least not quite where you might have thought.

Fan end. Bit of a job to get at! You'd need to get the whole fan/ alt assembly out, get the fan off, take the back off the alternator, but as you'd have to do all that to replace the alternator...

  17. ^this, in a perfect world. But as @mikedjames said, you need to take the plate off and find out what that bodged black wire is connected to inside. I'm sure true external regulator alts had a top connector and plug with more that one terminal to accomodate all the connections. As above, if it'll fit in the plate, an internal would be better, and likely what your alt had before someone hacked it up.

But, but, it's in the fan end! Why bodge it when you could fix it properly?
Yes, they a had a 3 spade plug but this one has an internal one. Perhaps it was bodged because of the extreme hassle accessing it.

  19. Thanks for that Zed. Great diagram. Looks like I'll have to take the fan and alternator off to sort it as you say. Thanks again. Dave

No probs, a quick google turned it all up. You'll have to also work out where they pulled the stray black wire from and put it back unless it was somehow added and not needed. For the record... I know nothing about alternators. !
