Would be interested on your battery size and cold cranking amps you have on it, i'm thinking my battery is probably a bit weak and deffo looks small for a 2 litre engine, whilst at Techenders it was noted my engine turns over slowly so i'm wondering if it's battery or maybe lazy starter? poptop has loaned me another to try but i think if i buy one i would like a nice juicy one in there, so what you got - with part number if poss, and also does a big battery get to a point where the alternator can't charge it fully? i have no idea what amp alternator is fitted to the van. Thanks Rick.

  2. I have a Halfords Advanced HCB 096, 680 Amps, 74 aH. If I wanted to spend more i would have got the bosch s5 series HSB 096 with 77 aH and 780 CCA.

Yes halfords is expensive but i have a trade card and it is on my doorstep and i wanted it there and then

thanks, is an 096 the biggest size you can fit in? it's been over 10 years since i worked at lucas and i can't rember the part codes now, seems strange 2 suppliers of 096's state different amps.

  4. get a bosch battery online .....get the next model up from stock ......dont go to big !

  5. mine is the same engine as yours by the way Ricky, I reckon you could fit in a slightly bigger battery but it defo doesnt need it. will do a pic of mine if you want?

I think the difference is the quality i suppose and the spec. when i first put it in I was amazed how quick it turned over and started!!

ok so seems 096 is the one to look for, i'll check what's in mine when i can and then price up the best 096 i can find.

  12. If you go for the eBay one in my link, check what the price is with eurocar parts for the same one.
I ordered the eBay one and when it arrived it had a euro parts sticker on it!

  13. Factory fitted stock battery was rated at 54Ah for all models from 1975.

    The standard size is 063; length: 210mm; width: 175mm; height: 175mm. A 096; length: 278mm ; width: 175mm ; Height: 190mm.

When I bought my 2ltr Westy it was fitted with a one year old GSF 063 battery http://www.gsfcarbatteries.com/68-79/971AA0631-5916.html I left it on trickle charge for 4 years while I rebuilt the van and it has been starting the engine without any problems for the last six months. My MGB also has a 063 series battery (supplied by Lucas), it’s 10years old now and recently I had to leave the car for 3 months during the coldest weather for many years. The radio and alarm were left connected and the battery still had enough in it to fire up the high compression 3.9 litre V8 on the first turn of the key.

A larger battery certainly won’t do any harm but do you really need it?

  17. It could be that your curent battery is low on power, if you got a drop test dine on it then it will tell you how much juice it is now providing.

My 900cca battery on ny old KIA was only actually providing 380cca, meant I needed a new one.

FI engines defo need a good solid 12 volts to start.
