Drum brake paint?

  1. So the trick to preserving the paint is avoid using the brakes.

    Zed and snotty like this.
  2. Exactly ;)! If you prime and paint them, it will last, but will eventually rust (like the rest of the van). Don’t use VHT paint, as it needs to be heated to cure. I’d doubt your drums ever get hot enough to do it properly.

  3. A bit of madness it is then. Must admit, mine were painted on purchase so i’m just doing a better job of it.

Makes me wonder what else i’ve painted that needn’t/shouldn’t be. Saying that, the windscreen does look rather fetching in satin black.

  4. Well rust is what I was trying to avoid. The drums are actually the least rusted thing on the van!
Not VHT paint, which is good to know about.

  5. Think I did mine with some primer, then straight rattle can black. It’s sort of lasted…

  6. PS As they get warm/hot, they don’t tend to rust much anyway.

    Certainly better than before.

2mm thick blobs of paint spilled through the bolt holes wasn’t doing them any favours.

I was about to spray and clean the brakes mechanism but read that brake cleaner shouldn’t go over rubber - which is on the cylinders.
What do folk do? Tape over the rubber?
Are there any other bits inside the mechanism to be avoided?
Watched a few videos but they just seem to spray the whole thing willy-nilly.
