pull the indicator stalk towards you.

 

... or if ours was anything to go by, indicate either right or left in a grandiose or sloppy manor

 

that only seems to flash main beam doesn't put on permanent

 

It’s broken then.

Check and clean all connections, then when that doesn’t work, buy a new relay.
