Leisure Battery?

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by LDM68, Jan 25, 2022.

  1. Looking for leisure battery recomendations for out '72 crossover, the battery will be located under the spre wheel in the engine bay and be connected to a split charger (JK). we currently have a standard spare starter battery but would like something a bit more suitable. We also have a Solar panel kit from JK that we can use to top it up.

Want to keep it simple and am a little confused by which bettery types would be suitable.

    Many thanks

  2. If you want a lead acid, Halfords HLB681 fits. It's 115Ah and about the largest you can get in under the spare wheel. Mine is connected by split charge relay and works fine but then it only currently powers LED lights and water pump.
I have 4 lithium cells and a BMS and from that I will build a 12V lithium pack to replace it, that's for powering the fridge and diesel heater when they are fitted.

Good advice is to pick one with the +ve terminal away from the spare wheel well.

The HLB681 is the right way round with positive on the left hand side but quite tall (224 mm high) .
I had to use an HLB700 to get it under the spare wheel well (190mm high) , but that one has its terminal sthe other way round... So I fitted it backwards to keep the positive terminal away from the spare wheel well.
And also connected a PVC vent tube to the hole on the end of the battery so the gas goes outside..

Or if the pos terminal is near the spare wheel just turn the battery around.

Awkward having them on the far side of the battery?

Depends on how many times you intend on accessing them in my case most never.

I am using quick release clamps, so I dont need to be able to see it to get the wires off.

  9. Didn't want to turn the battery around as it stretches the leads and don't like the idea of having the battery do close to the metal body for shorting out risks.
Anyone know of a battery with the terminals the other way round?

Yes, most leisure style batteries have terminals the other way around.
There is actually more room between the terminal posts and the bodywork if the battery is in backwards, even room for carefully wielded spanners, compared with under the spare wheel tub. Even the forward terminal is slightly to the left of the bulge..
Use quick release clamps with plastic covers and spanners dont go in there anyway.
Trying to use a quick release clamp with the battery terminals facing the engine bay is also constrained by the spare wheel tub above it. If you look at my picture you can see the marks, and how the blue clamp is actually fairly in open space beyond..

HLB 700 from Halfords is only £80 at the minute with trade card and extra 10% payday code. On line. Think I’ll be getting one .

  15. Surely putting a longer earth cable on the left side would sort the battery terminal problems?

  16. Just buy a battery that fits and has the terminals in the right place - no dramas - job done .
Battery Megastore is a good place to start...

  20. My bus started life as a panel van. It's got walk-through front seats and the spare wheel well in the rear left corner.
