All of the starter will motors rub if not supported by the bell housing bushing.. its a main starter shaft bearing.... even a good starter will struggle out on the bench.

Worth checking its not just a worn bushing in the first place.

    * except the ones for automatic gearboxes that dont need a bushing.

    Does this look right?[IMG][IMG]

  3. No, unfortunately. There were two types of starter (three if you include automatics), length different according to year/bellhousing fitted. Looks like yours is the wrong one. Also new one looks like a Chinese job, not a rebuilt Bosch.

  8. From memory, the CU boxes were fitted to later Bays. The earlier ones were CE. The bellhousings differ, hence the different length starter shafts. Forget what the dimensions are. Would appear you've got the incorrect one. I'll have a measure up of the earlier ones in the garage later.

If you do send it back to GSF, try and get one of the rebuilt ones. At least they're made of old Bosch parts.

I've reserved one to collect in store tomorrow
I have to take my old one with me to exchange so I'm assuming it's a reconditioned one.

  10. That sounds ok. The recon one I bought (I had to take the old one in) has lasted, and appears to be made of 70s/80s bits. Think a company in the UK reconditions them.
