Thought I’d best try start it yesterday as it’s been steadfastly ignored since September. Jumped into life on the second turn of the key.
    Happy days.

  5. Don't think anything's busted inside. Really, I've thrashed it for five years and haven't given it much attention. I'll start with the obvious exhaust leak, then whip the plugs out for a compression test.

Slowly getting there with my Propex underslung heater. The box is ready, the fixings under the van all sorted, the wires disconnected from the blocks to make a smaller hole in the box, I just hope I remember which way round they go! and the camper and the thermostat fixed into the old ashtray box. Just got lots still to do (gas, mains elecy etc) but I'm happy.

Could be a valve stuck open.
But as you say, five years may have accumulated a lot of little things .. maybe just needs heads off and tidying up valve seats.

Quick Q for the electricians on here.

I have some 3 core wire that was left by an electrician when they did our external lights (now removed). I was thinking of using this wire to connect my mains Propex feed from under the van to my internal 13amp socket. It will be fixed in place and won't flex. I've looked the cable up on the web but am confused as it looks like this is internal only! Would this cable be OK for my Propex use under the van?

    Spec on cable
    BASEC BS EN 50525-2-11: 2011 300/500V H05VV-F 3x1 SGMM 3183y OKE 2015-O011 CE

    Thanks

    1mm2 Solid core, not really.

Go down B&Q and get a length of arctic grade flexible multistrand core cable.

Thanks Mike and I've got all the proper stuff elsewhere on the van.

The cable I have is not solid. It was installed by an electrician for our external garden lights, so when I looked it up and it said for internal use, I just wanted to check before I tarred all sparkies with my wrath at being ripped off again with the garden lights.

The main difference outdoor flex cable is the uv protection and a bit of extra insulation so being well supported and protected under the van it should be fine as long as it’s also at least 1mm2 ideally 1.5mm2 it should have it stamped on it somewhere but the picture looks big enough.

you could always cut a bit off your hook up lead if your want

Cheers, the internal external issue was concerning me. I need to attach a new cable to the existing Propex cable that comes out of the sealed unit. The Propex has an electric heater rated up to 2kw / 9amps and the existing factory wire is stamped as 3x1mm²

The wire that I have, but am happy to buy new if it is not the right one, is also labeled as 3x1mm², so I'm assuming its OK.

You could also argue that under the bus, it is not in direct sunlight so any PVC insulated wire will not suffer too much.

I have been pleasantly surprised also by how the only hot part of the Propex, at least the HS2000 base model, is the heat outlet. The metal casing of the heater remains cool to the touch, so having it in a rectangular space with 20mm airgap above and wider gaps at the side and below, and with some insulation underneath a 9mm ply shelf above it, means I can store cans of soft drinks or bottled water on that shelf.

Not bad for £10 in a boat jumble, and maybe £100 of bits and pieces.

You've been a lot faster with your build Mike than I have with mine...making the underslung box has been challenging, in a fun way, but harder than I envisaged.

I was working to a deadline.. to be ready for the Vee Dub show at Stafford this weekend. The main hassle was small gas leaks on the compression joints from the copper tubing to the heater, as it is hard to insert the pipe into the fitting exactly perfectly working in a cramped corner behind the heater. The joint in "free space" at the other end of the tube was perfect.
The £20ish gas sniffer with a flexible metal probe holding the detector was excellent for pinpointing e.g. which end of a connection had the leak.
