Poked holes in it. I was only supposed to be replacing the brakes

When I took the cover off last month I noticed that my rear view mirror had a very straight line crack in it. So today I replaced it! Why can't all the jobs be as simple as this - didn't even get time to drink my tea! Mirrir crack.jpg Mirror2.jpg

Drove it up to B&Q picked up some bags of gravel and some carpet stone (concrete bricks cast onto a polyurethane mesh) for rebedding and widening our garden path, then to Halfords for some grease for doing the front beam this weekend, then M&S for some tasty pie meal deals..

Started pulling out the front suspension beam.
Got it out and swapped over the suspension arms and started chasing some rot that showed up as I removed the beam.. so spent most of the time cutting and welding patches.

This was why I swapped it.. the bottom offside suspension bearing would bounce around if you went off a speed bump . I had patched it up a few weeks back and ordered the new beam..

The arrow points at a crack ...

This beam needed the full sledgehammer treatment...
    20240406_130958.jpg
That was all a 1kg hammer could do..

The US Pro ball joint splitter sold for trucks on eBay for about £72 actually works...

    20240406_103340.jpg

And I managed to bounce the hub assembly off the back of my hand as it suddenly fell off..

    Ths scrap and the new..

Now to get a new clutch clevis pin..
    20240406_115116.jpg

And new shock absorbers as the coilover springs are too fat to fit... new KYBs on order will pick up from JK on Monday ..and a new clevis pin for the clutch..

I need to have a chat with you about that at TE hopefully.

Engine fitted today, slight struggle with the hanger. All seems good. Still loads to do before getting it on the road.
Want to make it to TE still if I can get sorted.

    Installed the new front beam.
Spent more time sorting out issues with getting nuts to do up on slightly rusty ball joints and things like that, than actually fitting the beam..

And pumping about 800g of grease into it.

For the fitting I put it on my atv jack and managed to rock it upright and then lift it with the jack into the hole in the chassis rails. Its pretty heavy with just the suspension arms on it.

Extra points awarded for.. getting one of the track rod ends the wrong side of the axle stand..had to jack it up and move the stand.

Then when I put wheels on it, first it looked like it was way too high, then on the second hit of the 22mm spanner (lowering stick) I went too far..and it sat on the jack.. so I left it and packed up for the day..

  11. Scrubbed the filth out of his engine compartment as a displacement activity. Fired him up with much spitting and banging. Got a hell of an exhaust leak from somewhere. Plugs out tomorrow.

  13. My 100% exhaust leak turned out to be a burnt out exhaust valve - just thought I'd mention it ....

Do you think eventually the underneath become pure weld, with no non weld material left?

  15. Hopefully not that drastic.

Do you have an idea what caused that yet ?

  20. Well it was 30 years ago bimbling around Turkey -
    Operator error.
Long before adopting the 'if-it-aint-broke-don't-fix-it' manta I set the tappets every couple of weeks and probably set it a tad tight . Sounded just like an exhaust leak , obviously down on power uphill but not too bad on the flat ..
