Did you use a rust killer on it ?

  2. Everything gets a good soaking in MetalReady (phosphoric acid & zinc).

    Oh yeah!
    Job list:
    Get engine out.
    Prep and paint engine bay.
'New' fan shroud with modified dog house to take a Type 4 oil cooler (more surface area)
Finally fit thermostat after years of intending to.
Powder coat tinware, engine bar, and tow bar.
    Fit Twin Dells.
Connect up the heating with the exhaust that we fitted back in July.
    Put engine back in.
    Enjoy.

    Added to the list:
Leakdown test tomorrow as piston rings are possibly a bit suspect - Alex was horrified at the colour of the oil only 500 miles after an oil change :(
More than likely fit new rings.

    Think that's it.
There is a bit of welding to do, but I'm not sure that is on the cards for this time.

Bloody hell it was baltic sitting in that engine bay today!

You do know it's a TLB tradition to post a photo of yourself inside the engine bay.

Might have to consider long trousers rather than shorts....

  8. which is fine when the outside temperature is high enough to cure. at this time of the year will remain soft for weeks.

  9. Maybe. Did some Rusto this week and it was fine.

  10. do you thin it first, if so with what?

  11. Thin it a bit, as it's been in the can a while. Acetone or white spirit works fine.

I once pressure washed three week old Hammerite off some metalwork. Had to creep round various cars in the area picking still sticky flakes off their roofs.

  13. If the heads are coming off measure them to confirm if you're in the 1776 gang...?

I'm sure I am.... now the fan shroud is off you can see all the grotty red paint that The Engine Shop use to distinguish their 'Big Bore Thurrock 1776'.
    I'll investigate!

  15. I’ll be interested to hear how well the fit of the fan shroud is with the type four cooler

It will also be interesting to hear what effect it has on temperatures. but adding dual carburettors at the same time may make the information less useful/ totally overwhelm it.
The high oil temperature and probably hot things everywhere is perhaps why the piston rings are sad.
Diverting extra air from the cylinder head through a bigger cooler might actually make the no3/no4 heads get hotter.. interestingly balanced discussion over on the Samba about the T4 mod.. some professionals refuse to fit it, others like it..

Thought of a T4 cooler upgrade crossed my mind all those years back but I preferred having a full flow oil filter as well as the extra cooler running outside the engine bay.. like when the filter caught all the bigger bits of piston on two occasions...

Trial fit..60mm diameter 1.6mm thick steel disc with 20.25mm centre hole welded to wheel. no timing locking screws yet..

The wheel is not clocked correctly yet either.. need to get it so the missing tooth is 90 degrees to the right of TDC.

Note to future. Buy a trigger wheel with a 42mm plus diameter hole in centre..

The pickup will go on a bracket coming down from the case joining clamp bolt above the pulley .

And I will be checking the pulley very carefully for TDC, see if I can get a dial gauge in No.3..

  20. I think you have to chop a bit out of the doghouse tin so it'll fit. Interesting mod, tho'
