Like it You could be right a bout the price but they reckon it's high build so should go far (engine tin like yourself, but also all the suspension bits etc?) How does it work work with the heat exchangers as I these get hot?
Will go with VHT paint then! Started to work on the starter motor - very rusty but solid. The piggy back module (forgot what it's called ) cleaned up and ready for some rust proofing: Start of the proofing: The main unit cleaned up and the proofing added: Ran out of etch primer so hope to tart up tomorrow (plus allows the proofer to do it's job better). Turned my attention to the cleaned up gearbox. After a few coats of etch primer and normal primer: Hoping tomorrow to finish of the starter then check it still works. Then get some VHT paint for the gearbox and give it a few coats. Cheers
Why not The gearbox had a coat of VHT paint and ended up dull and flat but not to bad: Dusted over the starter and piggyback thingy with etch primer: Gearbox now shiny - used some lacquer (oil resistant) to brighten it up: Sprayed the body of the starter with black paint and now mounted back again (having re-greased the inside of the starter): Next - will get the engine sorted next
nice work on the gearbox. i never have the time or motivation to paint them. its a nice touch. Just read through the whole thing, you have done some great work, leaps ahead of the state it was when you started.
Don't forget to remove to paint from the mating surface of gearbox/starter motor or you may have poor starting issue due to a bad earth
Very small update. During the weekend started on the engine dismantle to check it over an also give a good clean - very therapeutic I must say Started with this: Got the horrible good knows what carb off: Got the tinware off (rusted screws were a real pain: What was left of the exhausts off but one of the studs snapped so not happy with that: Getting there: Got the crankshaft pulley off and started to clean this area: I need to get the flywheel off so I can mount it to my engine mount jig thing but I see that you need a very large bar to get it off so will ask my local garage if I can borrow one this week. Cheers
Now't to report Daily decided to drop it's steering hydraulic fluid so knackered steering rack and pump so all time/money diverted to this. Hope to continue with the engine this weekend but see how my daily goes first.
Still around and still working on the van when I can...... Before Now: Inside the engine bay (near side). Rear shot. Rear quarter.
Thanks - not a great match but very close (it was resprayed around 11 years ago in a newer VW colour) - so once all the repairs are complete, I will sand it back and polish and see what it looks like.........
So - not sure were I was up to with the thread so will fill in a few missing blanks: Update 06.03.2015 Got a torque converter guismo so I could remove the nut holding the flywheel on so got it mounted on the engine stand and started to strip down more: Pretty boring to look at but.... 07.03.2015 Heads off, barrels off and a good look at what we have. Some coking but not to bad:
18.03.2015 Ok - so heads and barrels off. Oil pump will be next but I have no puller so will wait a bit longer. Started to clean the case. End float appears to be really good to, will measure soon properly. 21.03.2015 Bought some plastic bins to keep the bits taken off the engine in: Let the cleaning commence... (I am now bored but wanting to keep a record of what has gone on )
10.05.2015 Weather turning good so need to crack on with the body again. Started to prepare the piece that goes over the chassis leg and allows the rubber seal to attach for the off-side. A few piccies 11.05.2015 Finish off the rear corner where the cables come through.
