Are they all the same on 18 ..17 ..and 2 litre . i lost one when undid the nut as stud came off with it .
ordered a new one from jk and it came with a stud with two sizes ..one slightly bigger on one end ...i thought well thicker must be into the head deffo to big, so ordered another from vw heritage and the same again .

Both listed as to what i want ..so it appears that they need to be the same size thread , anyone else had this problem .

  2. What engine is it, can’t recall. Earlier 1700s have 8mm either end but laters and 1800, 2 litre are 9mm into the head and 8mm the other end. Often helicoils have been fitted and 8mm both end studs fitted! I’ve done a few over the years!

Big end goes in the block. All Type-4 stud sets are the same. So, you can't just tease a new stud in, the head has to come off and maybe the cylinder because the fat block end won't go through the holes.

I mean the small studs attached to the cylinder head where the heat exchanger is fitted to it they keep sending studs with two thread sizes ...pretty sure they should be the same size .

    Sorry, my mistake. :)
There are two types. M8/M8 and M8/M9.
Do the providers not say what they are selling?
It used to be difficult to source the 8/9 ones... no doubt the suppliers reacted... now they're usually all that's on offer!
I know when my engine was built RP couldn't find the proper 8/8 studs so he fitted the nearest 8/8 he could source.

Seems like it's just an exhaust stud with unequal length threads, usually about 50p a pop. Funny how VW aircooled ones are a fiver eh?
This is probably not right but I did search for m8/m8 x 56mm which I believe is the length? Nice that autodoc give the thread lengths, but I couldn't see an overall length. 16 + 30 + I guess 10 in the middle = 56.

yes thats the problem i have ..if the threads were both the same as the H Ex end it would fit .
They all send them like this ...might get some decent stainless threaded bar and use that ...all be it weaker .
Can never understand why things so simple are not simple ...give me a catalogue any day , too much trawling through components not precisely relevant to each other .

    Thanks for that Steve .

I’ve always thought the 8/9 mm were a saver stud for when you’ve stripped the thread in the head, I’ve got an M9 tap for this very purpose!

    I need one too. :)
Can't decide whether to helicoil for another 8/8 or see if I can get away with tap for 8/9.
Me too, but M9 in a stripped M8 doesn't really provide a full depth thread and what's left of the ali one is tapping has had a hard life. Then again getting a helicoil pre tensioning gadget in there is impossible.
Only early 1700 heads were 8/8, all the others are 8/9 IIRC.

  12. Standard is 9 into the head but I stick by my comment on 1700 heads being 8. I’m guessing the 9mm was an update to reduce them pulling.

It's not even all 1700 heads, just earlier ones so I read. I have 1700 heads on mine as you know and they are 8/8 but my westy engine and it's replacement were both 8/9.

Like a lot of parts for our buses, it's not enough to just buy what should be there, you have to look.

  14. I’ve got a set of M9 helicoil somewhere. Usually it’s best if it’s pulled to go for M8 helicoil. Quite a few options when they do go south such as m10 to m8 repair studs. Etc.

Think your just replacing so M8 generic stud should do you! Widely available and doesn’t matter if it’s a bit long. I’ve also used m8 threaded rod for this.
