  1. Do you get wheelwright cover with them for the Vardo Nipper?:)

I'm shopping around at the moment and have been thinking about the need for camping/habitation cover.

Is the concensus that you need to explicitly state that you want camping/habitation cover?

I'd dread this sort of scenario... "How did the fire start sir? Well I was cooking some bacon and the pan caught fire and well the rest is history..."

I'm not a huge fan of insurers and I am left with the feeling that they'll find any excuse to not pay out, even if it is an agreed valuation policy.

Are there any specifics you ask for when you get a quote?

Some of these prices seem very cheap. Don't get me wrong, I like good value and don't want to pay over the odds, but I wonder if some of these policies are as holey as swiss cheese.

I'd rather spend a bit more and know that if I ever did need to claim they'd honour the insurance as it was intended.

  4. I’m a member of a motoring organisation ( in a roundabout way ) I always state when applying as you get a discount! im in a classic vw club which is affiliated to the Volkswagen club of GB & we pay an annual subscription to them , we get members joining from other parts of the country as the discount is greater than the annual club membership!

  5. With regard to the habitation thing , never heard of that / extra premium or what ? would love to hear you findings though?

    I'll let you know.

I wonder if it is more of a recent thing. I'd never really given it much thought before.

As an example, Comfort Insurance want to see "A copy of your gas certificate or your habitation check"

You could almost see this as a condition of making a "fire related" claim.

At least Comfort are being up front about it. I'd dread to just assume that I'm covered, not have the "proof" they require as detailed in the small print and then find myself uninsured.

I'm going to read the small print very carefully before the cooling off period ends!

  7. And as far as I can remember it’s not one of the requisite application form questions ?

If somebody wants to see a gas certificate or a habitation check, you are probably talking to somebody who seems to think you have a motor home not a camper van. Probably this implies they arent the right people to handle your insurance.

Based on experiences of people on this forum, most recovery services offered free with insurance will get you home a lot later than the AA. Because of the shortage of HGV drivers, there are a lot of driverless recovery vehicles belonging to recovery contractor companies sitting around unused, despite people needing their services.

  9. I’ve had that with A Plan for a few years, with what a fridge, cooker, interior, awning, electrics, whatever else you happen to carry, costs I feel it’s worth having camper van cover and not just a potentially cheaper classic van cover that might not include all interior fittings and fixtures. Always confirm with your insurance company what is included.

I'm with Classic line and their agreed valuation is for two years. So if I renew with them, I don't have to do the agreed valuation and fork out another £25 up to the date the insurance expires.

Not sure about earlier, but as it seems to be a separate process, I can't see why not. Worth noting they do allow you to get your own valuation with a professional independent valuer if you want.

  14. Always had agreed values with Carole Nash for my rust buckets , they request an update with new pictures every 2 yrs like you say , but sure I have only paid if the value changes ( goes up in other words ) then I get an updated certificate of insurance with the ‘new value’ for £30 , at least that’s what happened this year , so they’ll always be a policy with an agreed value on

So after oodles of quotes, I finally agreed a new policy with a broker called Comfort Insurance.

They seemed to be one of a few specialist campervan/motorhome providers that knew what they were insuring.

Their policies are underwritten by Aviva. It's includes breakdown (with the AA) and 90 day foreign use as standard. Full habitation and personal effects covered up to £5k

They didn't want any more for an agreed valuation. All I needed to do was send them photos (10 in total) and it was included and detailed on the schedule. I did this before I bought the policy.

They were also up for protecting my 9 years no claims too. (Some insurers wouldn't do it)

I'd certainly ask them for a quote when your renewal comes round.

  18. That’s a great recommendation mate , will bear the company in mind in the future , assuming you have a Bay & it’s fully comp too ?
Did you get it under £200? & got to say my agreed value is free, but if I alter the amount( up it to reflect rising market values ) then a £30 charge is incurred, we’ll done

It was nearer £300, but included breakdown, legal cover and protected no claims for 3 drivers. I didn't think that was too bad.

  20. You did ok ,mine was actually half that , but everyone’s circumstances & requirements are different, I think the secret is - shop around & try & knock the best price down , a different operator gave me a lower quote ? They are all merchants!
