Vw birth certificate

  1. I’m just about to apply for a vw birth certificate
Filling the form in it asks for vin number
Then next it asks for model type
What should I be writing for a late bay ?

Also does the van have to be insured before I send the log book and certificate of to change to historic
As the v5 mentions you can’t change tax class without taxing the vehicle
So to tax a vehicle it needs insurance and mot
Am I going to have to insure, mot and then pay to tax it before I can apply for historic tax?

The van was built in 78 but imported into the uk in 1984 so my v5 shows date of first registration as 06/07/1984
However on the v5c/2 new keepers details section
It shows the same date of first registration but in brackets at the side says
    (Decl/d manuf 1978)

So I’m wondering if that’s enough to apply or are they just going to go off the first registration date and I have to prove it was built in 1978

    It’s all getting rather confusing

Yes pay to tax, convert to historic get some refunded.

In the end it will be OK

  3. I’ve just gone online as if I wanted to tax it
It pops up to say according to their records the vehicle was manufactured more than 40 years ago and is exempt from mot if it’s not been substantially altered
If I tick the box declaring it’s not substantially altered it takes me to the 6 months or twelve months page.

So does this mean I won’t need the birth certificate but will have to pay for tax then try after to alter the tax class or could the tax class be changed whilst I apply for tax?

I’ve heard of people taxing them to make the change but get no refund afterwards.

If the system recognises that the vehicle is 40yrs+ then when you get to the 6 or 12 months bit, it should know to charge you £0?

  5. That’s the strange thing it doesn’t
It shows the price for 6 months and the price for 12 months

Then I think you may have to pay it and get a refund? Good system huh?

  7. I went through a similar process last year at the beginning of the pandemic, but was advised to ring up DVLA to confirm what to do, so there was no guessing. They told me to post in my documents with a covering letter. The DVLA web site gives the phone number. You might have to hang on, but they were very helpful.

  8. What did you write on the covering letter
And what documents did you send

Was your bus taxed, insured and motd when you sent the letter off?

  9. Seems a silly system to me

  10. Normally transfer to Historic would be done at the post office. I wrote to explain that I was unable to apply at the post office as my vehicle was an import and they were unable to accept the proof of age. It was the PO who told me to ring DVLA. Hence I sent them my vw birth certificate, my vehicle registration (amended for Historic) and my MOT exemption application.

I was fully taxed, insured etc, and I realise your circumstances are not the same but I was asking round getting different answers so eventually had to get it straight from the horse's mouth, in my case a very nice Welsh lady.

They eventually returned the documents making it Historic after about 3 months.

  11. Cheers for the info

  12. First things first - get the taxation class changed to 'HISTORIC' and good things will follow , free tax , automatic MOT exemption and you'll be fighting off the ladies ...

No silly certificate needed as it's declared manufactured in 1978 on the V5 .
Decode the VIN plate if you've a few minutes to kill , I found it quite interesting - originally a Dutch postal van which explains the red body paint and panel van windows, even tells you the interior finish - worth doing

  13. But it won't be (the cause of probs in the past doing it at the Post Office). The DVLA records show the date of registration, which could be a good while after the date of manufacture. Mine was a good 9 months later, so I had to send my docs off to Swansea.

  16. Yes mine was registered in the uk years after it was manufactured
It seems the mot exemption is running off the build year but the tax system is running off the registration year.
Which is bonkers as they obviously know it’s build date.

  17. But as I understand it, they’re not interested in the build date. Year of registration will be when the car officially “exists” as far as they’re concerned,

  18. Same as mine and the same conversion - Leisuredrive.
Mine was manufactured as a basic van in june1975, delivered to the Dutch postal service where it spent a few years presumably delivering parcels . It was then sold and imported to the Leisuredrive conversion garden shed where it emerged in '79 sporting a 'V' plate . The V5 is very clear on date of manufacture ('75) and that it's an import registeted in the UK ...
Both tax and mot exemptions run from the date of manufacture NOT import or UK registration date .

  19. Yes they should both run from year of manufacture
But on the system it lets me choose mot exemption as that part seems to know the build date
But when it comes to the tax it shows the cost as it seems to be running off the registration date

So if I go to the post office to register as historic it seems they will want proof of the build date as their computer will show the registration date.

A vw birth certificate is about 100 euro
I was hoping to avoid buying one if I didn’t need it.

  20. Where abouts on the v5 does yours show the build date?
Mine shows it on the new keeper section
