  1. Thanks for heads up on tab ends ! Not moved since I was sorting knocking problem , and washer jet issue ,and horn issue . All just about sorted although it will still be knocking I’d imagine . I finally got the wire on the spade connector at the base of the steering column and put it all back together but horn is still not working but I think it may be an issue elsewhere with the wires. Still have to fit that sound deadening I picked up at Tatton ! job’s, job’s , job’s .......what fun .

Waited for the rain to stop. Torqued up the second cylinder head, fitted tinware, gave it a dust over with black paint where I scratched it.

Found a couple of exhaust clamps in the spares box. Did a trial fit of the K-Jet FI but then put the carburettor back on it as I need to prepare the fuel feed and electric pump location for the FI and fix the final detail of the throttle linkage which needs some ball bearing races fitted.
At least the FI throttle cable lines up exactly with the fan housing - it goes through the FI plenum under the throttle body in an extra bit of tube I had to fit. The Beetle fan housing that went with the FI had the throttle cable going through the fanhousing about 5cm to the left of the normal path.
Went indoors as the sun set. Engine mostly complete and nearly ready for putting back in the bus after rain tomorrow morning.

When it stopped raining, finished fitting tinware, fitted exhaust.
Lifted engine on jack, threaded throttle cable through, pushed it forward on the jack and it went straight in. No fighting. At all.
    Bolted it in.
Then noticed offside GSF CV joint gaiter boot now has a split where I touched it pulling the engine out.
Ordered some new ones from VWH to fit while its still up on ramps.
At least the engine is no longer sitting on wet oily packing case plywood.

Spent quite a lot of time trying to fit the thermostat. The thread has all worn away so I gave up cut 5mm off the top and soldered a 5nm tall brass M4 tapped PCB standoff to it with lead free solder which is harder than the leaded stuff.
Used a Draper jewellers butane torch to heat it.. a mini blow torch in the form of a pen .. and some plumbing flux.
Now the thermostat does not just drop off the wire..

  9. Started rear valance removed old filled panel. Ordered new from Schofields when arrives will try find where top lip joins. Also removed and flattened where engine lid seal fits as seal never fitted due to rough edges. [IMG][IMG][IMG]

Finished off putting the engine together and got it started.
Found timing light has broken - one wire end of the strobe tube has snapped off.. will go to Flying Tiger and buy a disco strobe for £5 and use that for parts.

Took the driveshafts off and started taking the boots off . Only one bolt needed Mole grips (fumbled putting the hex bit into the bolt head hidden above the drive shaft amdand that was it...). And one was suspiciously loose (my fault).

My VWH order has been with DPD from Shoreham to Hinckley (just south of Eddies farm...) and back to Southampton since I ordered it so the parts will be here by 1030 today ..
Hopefully I will be able to go somewhere for cofvefe in the bus tomorrow.

Moved the van from the south of the estate to the north then picked up a new daily.

The van is officially retired from daily driver duties. Hopefully more focused maintenance / resto work can commence now

Picked her up after having some welding done......small jobs that ended up being a bottom half respray!
Can now start putting her pretty bits on and refitting the interior.

This afternoon fitted new Lobro driveshaft boots , added some fresh grease then got the bus off the ramps.

Accidentally discovered a new technique for getting it off ramps without it bottoming out. I gave it a bit too much welly to get it over the edge of the ramps and fired them out the back at about 10mph. So by the time the bus dropped down the ramps they were not there..

Now to fix the timing light and set the timing.
