Broken fan belt advice

Hi guys. So my fan belt broke on the way to work this morning. Just ordering some new ones, however there are 2 different ones, for dynamo an alternator. My van had a split charging system at one point so I assume its an alternator and not a dynamo size belt I want. Is this correct? (Sorry to sound dumb, but I'm not sure what each look like).

 

Dynamo is a cylinder, alternator is fatter at the belt end.

 

Suspect it's alternator then! Good job the drive to work isn't too far. Only a little smokey!

 

how far did you drive with a broken belt?
I take it the exhaust got a bit smokey.

 

If you've got a type 1 engine, I'd resist the temptation to drive without a fan belt...

 

Probably no more than 3 miles so hopefully not far enough to cause serious damage. It's a 1600. Getting a temp fan belt from halfords to get me home then will fit correct one when they arrive.

Yes I did know about the fan, hence my concern. I've 2 on order and just picked up another. Spare fan belt will now be part of my spares kit. It was only 3 miles or so, hopefully no damage done.
