Seriously though guys. What should I do? Fit new belt and start it up or what? How would I know if its serious?

if it was mine i'd fit the belt and see, if it's damaged it's done now and you either need to run it or strip it to see.

Tel tale signs to look out for? Think I'll fit the new one, get her home and get to garage at some point soon.

check oil, take it easy, listen for strange noises, if it starts slowing down or losing power pull over and ring the big yellow taxi, good luck.

  6. I feel for you mate!

Do as in the foregoing posts and I hope that someone up there loves you.

I'm not gloating, but please post how it goes with a new belt fitted.

Thanks for the support guys. That's what I'm hoping! It's a constant learning curve owning a van, hoping this ends happily and is just a lesson learnt.

  9. Now viewers dont try this at home!!
Besides the belt was not tensioned sufficiently, IMHO.

I'll probably not do it that way! 2 new belts should arrive tomorrow from C&C, halfords didn't stock them.

Morning guys. Ok status update: I fitted a new fan belt and left her running for 10 mins or so. All seemed fine, drove her back with no issues what so ever. Will be keeping a careful eye on her though over the next month or so. Hopefully this is just a case of learning through mistakes and the only lasting impact is it scaring the Marmite out of me.

I thought you'd probably get away with it. You were quite lucky though.

not wanting to put a downer on it 'cos i hope you have got away with it but i'd be dropping the oil and changing it and filter if applicable just to have a look/smell of it, as zed says you probably got away with it 'cos it's winter and you was pootleing to work but it would still be at the back of my mind that the bearings got a bit warm and may be damaged - i hope not and think not but keep your eyes and ears open.

i added filter incase a additional one had been added - i realise the lawnmower jobs don't have them as standard (hence the word applicable)

More likely to have wharped the heads/barrels/pulled head studs I would think. If it drives and doesn't tighten up/loose power should be fine.
