How long to change an engine?

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Carl1974, Apr 24, 2013.

  1. So i have a replacement 1600 engine to replace the knackered 1600 in situ. How long do you think it will take to swap them out? Also not sure if current or replacement are single or twin port how do you tell?

  2. what is your set up? fully tooled up?,in garage or street?, all the fasteners brush cleaned and soaked overnight in say, "plusgas,? got a mate to help ?a clear gung ho approach , ? read all the "bibles "....eyeing the job suspiciously ?

  4. Pity they aren't local to me - I could have all my fuel lines changed in less than 5 minutes

    A hour if its raining
I would leave half day by the time you get started and tea breaks, a chat and finding the bits you drop.

If it's a bare engine and you're swapping all the tin, exhaust, ancilliaries take your time and a long day/weekend. Almost sure to be some hold-up, but you never know. If it's turnkey, a lazy hour out and a lazy 2 hours in.

  7. under the carbe there is a pipe that goes to both cylinder heads ,if that pipe has two rubber boots half way then it `s a twinport...

takes me 10 minutes to swap...:p

  8. I'd say a weekend if you're new to it - includes time to fix everything else in the engine compartment ;)

  9. Thanks for the info, its a gamble £120 from oswestry show but good compression and "it ran" guarantee from seller! Sure we can get it going...

  10. if youve got fuel, spark and compression then it will go :)
thats pretty much the rule, and at work we have the exception that proves the rule so you should be safe...

Well it has compression you said so that's good. But you do know it would "run" if the big ends had gone for instance, or it had terminal end float. Does it have a flywheel fitted? Sorry to sound so negative, but the days of £120 engines are long gone I think.

But it could be a good one and I hope it is. Don't forget to report back. thumbsup:

  15. Yes it has a flywheel fitted, i am as suspicious as the next man but like i said its a gamble!
