I hope you find it! Dougal was my first car and still my daily. Not been on vw forums, other than this one for years. He’s on the GT beetle register but that’s about it, if yours was a special edition there may be a register for that to track it down? I’m not looking forward to doing Dougal and mick suggested i may have to face up to the unthinkable ... but I’m not thinking about that *outs fingers in ears and sings* It’s only metal and all sortable. Eventually
How fantastic to still have it and be using it as your daily , the unthinkable is not an option, exactly it’s only metal and all sortable, mine wasn’t a special edition, just would love to be able to find it and restore it ......though I should really make a start on the bus first ! Yours and other posts are inspiring to make that start , and I now have a garage so no excuses, maybe after techenders ...... Have you got any pics of Dougal ? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
No bloody excuse at all! I’ve not checked Dougal’s underbelly for years and his bodywork is looking rough too now. Eek. Tomato red gt - taken last week - his good side.
I always wanted him to be a cal looker but when I found out he was a gt and one of only a thousand or so, I put him back to stock and original colour - very German looker - the engine cowl was a bridge too far and that never did go back on!
I need to get some tips off you for rust prevention treatments. The camper is in much need of a lot of TLC. Louey
I just went with recommendations and rather than working out the best system in a product range, I called bilt-hamber tech folk told them the issues and they advised me.
i don't really take many pics of the bug, i guess because it's my daily and it's less of an event when i use him , i'll see if i can dig some out but most will be on proper film he was supposed to stay in storage and be restored once i'd done the house but a broken camper engine forced him back out now he's in dire need of work, so once camper is back i'll look at getting Dougal sorted. I put day mouldings fibreglass wings on years ago after the frustration of rubbish ones turning to soggy cardboard every couple of years - didn't get round to having them sprayed because he was due an overhaul resto. It was 19 years ago that i last restored him and he's been my daily, living outside and covered lots of miles since - poor thing.
The interior isn't original as it should be beige velour/draylon, and years ago they were like rocking horse poop to get hold of also, i don't like them. I bought him a year correct dogtooth interior and put in black door cards, which looked much better and a lot more hard wearing Other than the engine cowl, fibreglass wings and a grumpty engine - he's stock
definitely! Mostly because i can't imagine not keeping him. He still has the higher ratio gearbox - a lot were nicked for campers! and when he's running well he's like a racing car! to me, as i've only ever had the bug and camper. I always thought that my 'grown up car' would be a porsche 356, karmann ghia or a fastback but i found it difficult to part with the bug - we've had lots of adventures and you'd be amazed how much i can get in and on him and still bomb down the M1! There was a time i used to show him but nowadays there's just rust and moss
Found a few on my phone @Geordie about ten years ago? Coming out of hibernation when the camper engine went pop in 2015 - he was only in storage for a few months and didn’t get the resto/pampering he deserved Last year after a wash and polish. He has a rust hole in his rear roof corner which is gaffered over, lower repair panels are starting to show along the seams and his a pillar seams are rusty Bugger only knows what his floor and heater channels are like! Would love to get him sorted but I fear it won’t be this year what with other stuff going on.
@Ermintrude I kinda like the two tone red and white .... I thought it deliberate Good looking machine
i've definitely got used to it - maybe it's because it's getting towards the cal look i always wanted. Damn finding the AD number and finding out it was a limited special edition!
