There's absolutely no need to stop after 9 miles to check the temperature.
If its been well serviced these buses will run no problem in some of the hottest countries in the world. 9 miles in the UK really shouldn't be an issue.
With all the talk of over heating recently I'm surprised anyone ever uses their buses!

  3. I drove it to work today (7 miles) and stuck my head in the engine bay after I'd stopped and was pleasantly surprised as to how cool it was in there. I suppose the more I drive her the more confident I will get that this one wont melt and I suppose it helps now that I kinda know what to look for and the cause's

Yep three wheels on Morks wagen!! We painted the steel wheels white & didn't clean the wheel nut seats properly & the lh front wheel came adrift on the A1  was very nerve wracking afterwards

  5. Indeed, don't get me wrong I love driving my van! I don't really think about it nowadays that I do all my own servicing but it is nice when you get to the top of a hill or after a long journey and give the old girl a pat on the dashboard!

  6. That's true and after the first long trip all your worries should be behind you, as you'll have settled in to it and realise that all is now well. I think most of us have had some sort of similar doubts at one stage or another.

    My sentiments exactly :)

  7. I just assume I'm not going to get there so I don't worry about it. Then when I do get there, I'm even the more happy. Then I assume that getting there has just guaranteed that I'm not going to get home again.

  8. Easy to suffer from newly-fixed-van paranoia... The only remedy is to get in and drive without thinking about it, then get in and do it again. Maybe something'll break, but you'll fix that and drive it again. Eventually, everything'll be fixed ;)

Said it many a time, but ropey under-maintained campers weren't the busses' main purpose in life. They were designed as hard-working vans. In good shape, they're utterly reliable

I hear you on that. It's taken me 771 miles to start trusting Barry after last years epic intermittent ignition and fuel problems to be eradicated. It's the intermittent faults that are the worst.

Start gently and build up. Do the dipstick check. Look for oil leaks and check the oil level before setting off on the return trip.

I just fitted new cylinder heads and I am going through the same confidence building, with paranoia about little noises.
(It was just needing one of the exhaust to cylinder head joints tightening up. :) )

  11. Well turns out I took it for the long run a week later. Now sat in a layby with what looks like a seized engine :( very unhappy face. Didn't go above 60 once. Damn things

What makes you think its seized?
You've been running it about no problem haven't you?

well said, i have a tinge of worry sometimes in mine because of the strange noises the autobox makes - but i'm in the AA and as long as i don't use the van to take a pregnant lady on an unocupied stretch of road to a rural hospital with no phone signal i'll be ok..... one day it will breakdown, or it won't i maintain what i can but i'm not looking for things to do hence my ignorance with the box.... if it pops i'll take it off the road and fix it when i can afford it - i certainly can't afford to fix it first, it's been making the noise for 2 years and 4500 miles in my ownership so i'm risking it for a swisskit.

  14. Well it won't turn over by key or by hand. Was running fine, then got a burning smell and a noise that's sounded like a bag of nails.
