    Welded some more.

Flooded the engine because I keep driving it back 2 feet when I finish welding then stopping it.
Took a minute of starter with foot hard down. Think I might go searching for dirt in the needle valve.

Installed a new battery to starter cable; found a leaking fuel pipe, which was missing a hose clamp, put one on and all is well. Took the spare down to the garage to get a puncture fixed. Gave it a bit of a hoover. That was enough for a day.

About to drill new holes for the bed base and seatbelt in my nice new 1.2mm plate in the wheel arch.

  9. Cleaned it out after a 500 mile trip up through snowdonia and back with the kids. Ran great, no issues!

Only adjustment on returning was to get the handbrake set up properly - those pesky welsh mountains are a lot steeper than the little hills we have here in Oxfordshire!

Running like a dog though so gave it a service and found points closed up , back up to speed now

  13. Haven't really got any left, surprisingly. Throttle tube, throttle cable and manifold gaskets - and they all (gasp) work.

Finished off wheel arch with a stack of primer, stonechip and then fairly thin underseal rubbed on by hand in a rubber glove. ...

Today stripped down my progressive carburettor to see what I could do about wobbly leaky throttle shaft. Bought some 8x10x8 mm bushes and started thinking about a a custom drilling/milling tool to enlarge the spindle holes to 10mm for 8mm depth.

Then stripped down a rebushed but then abandoned 34PICT-3 and stuck it piece by piece in a Lidl ultrasonic cleaner. The castings take at least 4 goes at different angles to get them all in.
It looks cleaner now, just need to sort out some spindle binding issues, its not perfect.
Put it back together again before I forgot how it goes.

Off to visit SGS Aircooled tomorrow, to get the vibe as they are now under new management to discuss arranging an MOT.
Hopefully the place will be full of "*** Bay Windows" as Scott , the previous owner, (
Beetle, splittie, Type 3 owner) always put it.

The bus could be exempt but I think it still needs something like an MOT. Its also far easier to justify the repair if its an MOT faulure...

Took it to work. Idle a bit high. Even more popping.
Turned out the carburettor fiddling had moved the end stop on the throttle plate . And the manifold vacuum hose T piece going off to the sensor was knocked off...so it had a 2mm hole in the manifold...

Visited Kevin at SGS Aircooled- definitely still in business. Plenty of VW aircooled cars in the workshop and outside, from Beetles to a T25 via a 1974 SA Fleetline Splitty that he is doing up. He definitely loves aircooled cars, he has about 6 of his own.
Booked my bus in for an MOT (fail) ...

  16. Painted yet more rust converter underneath, finished off the plate to replace the radio section that I'm sure had been cut out using an old and very blunt tin opener! Now about to start on wiring in the electric fuel pump.

    Before [IMG]

    After [IMG]

I think it needs a few more coats but it will do for now, until I decide if I'm fitting gauges and switches in it.

  17. Wire brushed underneath ready for the application of Bilt Hamber rust protection which I expect to arrive tomorrow. Also fibreglassed over a couple of small holes in cab floor.

  18. Removed my dizzy and fuel pump , bludee hoses are so tight I couldn’t get them off without cutting so didn’t bother . My heads heat scoop has come loose again but my back wasn’t up to getting under ,so put pump back and dizzy . Called it a day as peeezing darn ,typical
