VW T2 1972, building a totally new car

Discussion in 'Restorations' started by Ziiga, Jul 23, 2013.

  1. @Zubedee i've got BBS RS rims 16" and they fit under the wheel but there's maybe 8mm on each side. =)

I am realy glad that you like the bus. My main goal when i got it was only rebuild. As you can see now, this is not only a rebuild but developement of new brake adapters, cooling, rear defusser, electrical assisted steering, subaru engine, electrical front seats, new platform...

I am thinking also about new suspension. From Protlum with remote reservoars but that is not in the plan right now. Maybe but i will need to develope new lower trailing arms for the front and new top mounting for rear, and also mounting plate for rear arms...

All in all, from the outside will be just one ordinary bus =)

  2. I love the fact you're thinking outside the box as it were. Theres too many lowered, narrowed buses that look similar.
You'd have a helluva time registering it for road use in the UK which is a shame. :(

  3. Such a top project. I guess over here you would have to register it on a Q plate after a VICE test?

  4. Mot... Hmm yeah i know :)) but regarding that the exterior will be original, only rims will not be original i guess it wount be such a poblem. At first i need to pass oldtimer certificate and then mot :)))

  5. Is it still gonna be classed as a t25 (t3) or a bay window for registration purposes?

  6. it will be classed as VW T2, original =) the whole bus will be in new blue paint, that noone will found out that this bus is from two deferent cars. And also the underbody will be sprayed in the same color as outerside =)

If i would want to register as it is, in our country we don't have any institutions that could give me a registration papers. Like in Germany Tüv. It may be only one option. That i could register the vehicle as my own build, but in this case i need to add all the straightening calculations of the chassis and engine mounts, brakes if they are compatibile, calculate the brake adapters, powershafts.... and sooo on and so on =) As you can see the official route to registration papers in like never ending story... =)

  7. Just put the chassis plate from the t2 chassis onto the t25(3)

  8. I will have VIN number on the same position as t25 because always if anyone was looking for vin at mot, they always look on the lover right section (as t25). On the position as on T2 I will have radiator and two big fans =))

  9. Because this was the last weekend without the snow as forecast says, i went with my bus to last trip this year

  10. Hello again.

Now it is on. The project must go on. As you may know i will replace all side panels. I guess that those side panels were spotwelded together before they were spot welded to inner side window frame. Or am i wrong? Does anyone have a clue what is the best way to weld them as original.

If i spotweld them together on the floor (side panel from B to C column and panel from C to D and also back corner) and then weld them to the bus? What do you think? does anyone have experience with it?

  11. Noone changed the whole side panels?

Never all at the same time. Most of us repair the panels if we can.
I do spot weld outer sill to side panel then to bus as you can't do it on the bus.
VW could to spot weld from only 1 side I think?

  13. @zed tnx for reply. I am aware of that and i do it also this way. Actualy is the first time that i need to replace the whole side. And the dilema for me is how the hell they did spotweld all panels together? Because if you're welding on panel by panel, you simply can't spotweld them together. I would like to fabricate as original as possible.
I'll try it =) and then we'll see how it goes

And one more thing. Rear corner panels. Before you weld it in, does anyone paint inner panel? And inner plane of rear corner panel?

  14. Today i manage to get the front brakes sorted. All M14 bolts, 8mm steel adapterplate. Disc is fully aligned. I am realy satisfied with the result.

  15. I put this project tu next level =)) Make it my priority till summer.

Regarding that all brakes are done, including the mastercylinder bracket and excluding brakelines i can now finnaly say that i am finished with brake system. But not the biggest thing on my bay. The body work.... wiiiihaaaa

I totaly dismantle the bay, which lefts me only with bare shell...

I hope that you're looking forward to new posts as much as i do :chewie:

  16. I finnaly get the right motivation for the project.

Wire brushed the paint from window panels and now i can finnaly drill all the spot welds out. Those window frames will be also reused on other bay

Made new lower rail for sliding door.. The old one was realy perished.. Manufactured both middle sills... Now it's time to put new panels on . Also made draining channels on inner sills.

I'm sure I've heard you can't as it seems to be a popular cut.
    @zed?

  19. I had to save the one track from my old sill when I replaced mine as it was unavailable

You can only get the "shelf" part that the roller runs on attached to a cill, (easy for you to make anyway) but where the cill should wrap round at the top forming the part that stops the runner falling out, the ones you can buy don't include this. Normally that part survives and you would join onto it, or remove, repair, join to your new cill and refit as one.
