  1. Ooh, no sir. Still kept it even after they introduced DTMF (tone-dialling) in the 80s, as there was so much legacy kit around. Golden rule was that whatever fancy modern fandangos you introduced, the Plain Old Telephone System still had to keep working. I assume it still does.

  3. Given SS7 is past its silver jubilee I am somewhat surprised pulse dialling is still supported, but then the phone system was always the most reliable thing on the planet and I haven't done that sort of telecoms for a long long time.

  4. May still use SS7, but that's behind the exchange. Still around for signalling on the older cellular networks.

Still need clunky 50V POTS, as one good nuclear blast will make all this new-fangled VoIP kit and like stop working. Hahahahahaaaa.

  5. Last time I worked on telecoms, it was SS7 over IP, SIP and Megaco, H.248 etc. Given the conservative nature of Telcos I am not surprised at pulse dialling still working.

Designing scopes and analysers has been more challenging, I'll happily leave that modern software stuff to the script kiddies ;)

BT Lines are still pulse, so as long as the supplier (Sky, Talk Talk etc) still use the BT system, old phones will work on them.
I used to love converting and restoring 700 series phones, such lovely design and colours - but people selling even unconverted, really shabby ones are asking silly money now, and it's not worth it for anything other than the fun of it, and losing money when I flog them on. I haven't seen one for under £20 in ages.

  7. Those old phones are certainly a lovely piece of industrial design :)

  8. I've still got a couple of refurbed 746s somewhere in the garage, but their governors have gone mouldy so they jam up :(. I'm saving them in case nuclear war breaks out.

Who buys these things - hipsters?

  9. Ooh. There’s a nice Avocado Green 746 on eBay, complete with green old school PO junction box. Right up your street ;).

What do these things normally sell for?

Definitely hipsters. The check shirts, beard and man-bun is no longer enough; a phone that actually requires a certain level of intelligence and physical fitness to dial a number is now an essential part of the everyday hipster household.
*some of the above may not be true ;)

Aaah two-tone green.... not had one of those for a while.
They're usually around £50 these days for a proper nice converted one, in Black or Red. The other colours are less popular (especially Ivory) - I like Concord Blue myself. Or Topaz Yellow.

  13. Hmm, no man-bun here but, well a tick to the big beard, a definite penchant for a check shirt and... our current house phone... a 1978 746 in two tone green (re-issued in '81) :D

  16. I used to have quite a collection of 706's and 746's plus a trimphone and a 'compact' in a lovely mid blue colour but sold most of them a while back when I cleared the garage to make way for the camper. One of my brothers still has a very large collection of 60's and 70's phones

I have an early two-tone grey 706 (1966) that I should really sell, as I’ve got no where left to plug it in, but I just can’t bear to let it go

  20. Just had a rummage and it seems all that's left of my collection now is this rather sorry looking 1971 746...
