    No split pin?

  2. Yes, split pin was in there, but like @theBusmonkey, you could turn the nut, albeit with an expanding spanner and as just as far as the pin.

So the nut wasn't tight enough and now something has worn. I had the same with my 68 when I got it - as the rear hubs/drums were one piece and something silly like £500 a pair I lent on the nut and it was fine ever after. The end of the hub the nut tightens on was quite worn.

  4. Ok, so tighten and monitor?

Worked for me. Can you see wear under the nut?
Though you should investigate a bit maybe, I did take mine apart to see the bearings were ok etc.

Hi - we went from Toulouse along the coast to Montpelier and then along the coast from there but would of been cool to see Lyon - in fact also st etienne ( my friend is the key board player in that band of same name from way back when )

I reckon nipping up the wheel nuts was probably your answer.

Edit Sorry didn't see it was the axle nut in the end.

Axle nut was another members solution - I don’t know what caused it and if I have fixed it but currently it’s ok and noise has gone. ( for now !?

And a big breaker bar.. main thing is that all the time its slack, it wears the splines that transfer drive to the hub so the whole stack needs to be locked down with the torque of that nut.. and hopefully you fit a split pin to lock it..and you turn the nut a little tighter not looser if the pin wont go in .. once locked off you cant do any more..
End game is no drive if it has been happening a while.. somebody didnt do it up properly in the first case.. e.g. virtually no hand held battery rattle guns give enough torque ..
