  1. That cog thing  are you going poke a Lolly stick into it with a clothes peg ?:)

The doghouse is extended to fit the oil cooler with 2 extra plates.
If I was doing a complete rebuild - or buying a new engine - I'd get it tapped for a full flow oil system, but I'm not so this is worth a look... maybe it won't make much difference, maybe it will..... and as Mike says, doing two mods at the same time (ie fitting the dells as well) will make the results skewed anyway. To be frank, as long as my engine runs a bit cooler so I can actually maintain 65 for more than 5 minutes, I'll be happy enough.

  3. Check the filler hose and breathers on the fuel tank while you've got the engine out?

Filler hose is looking good from my position in the engine bay - but it was only changed 14 months ago when the last one decided to pee petrol all over the New Forest, so I should hope it would. Breathers and pipes were done at the same time - but I do need to remember the tricky little one behind the spare wheel well as I haven't done it for about 5 years.

I went to crack the passenger window, as the cab was a bit steamed up. The window stayed up, the regulator came down. At least I knew what it was this time.

Door card off, I nipped the glass holder a little in the vice, and sprayed some more silicone in the window runner channels. It was a bit of a mare to get the glass back in the holder again but it’s all back together and working.

I also found a rubber boot to go over the handbrake lever where it goes through the cab floor, and fitted it. Hopefully no more cold draught from there, we could see the road going by underneath us.

Is that a simple job? I've had one kicking around for years and never got around to fitting it. I shall be inspired by yours (as long as it's a simple job!)

  7. If you've got a later Bay, the boot with the handbrake adjuster bulges on the side) won't fit :). VW deleted it. Late ones seal the gap with the tight floormat and strips of foam (likely long gone) around the handbrake hole.

  8. You can live without the full flow. It's good as it preserves your bearings, but unless the person doing it can tap straight, likely to go a bit pear-shaped.

It will fit, I've got one on my 74.

  10. Won't on a '78 without chopping the floormat up.

’77 must be the cut-off year, mine doesn’t have the adjusters on the lever and the boot fits just fine. I thought all years were the same and had to look at the parts list to see the difference.

  12. I thought you could buy pre fabricated shrouds to take the type four cooler nowadays.

  13. And a video of you wiggling your bum whilst leaning in the engine bay revving the engine when it goes back in

You can (in theory). VWH were the only UK suppliers when I was looking last year.
CSP were selling them in Europe, and I think there was somewhere in the 'states too.
I tried and tried to get one from Heritage, but they were permanently 'on back order' or 'available soon'.
In the end, Alex the mechanic had one at the workshop that a friend had made as a prototype, laboriously TIG welding the doghouse extension! That's the one I've now got :)

  17. Has your stock floormat got a thin slot in it that goes around the lever?

  18. I thought so but was questioning my memory for a bit then.

The stock floormat was chucked out more than 10 years ago. :) Madmatz carpet in there now.

Leak down test on the engine today:
    Cylinder 1: less than 10%
    Cylinder 2: 10%
    Cylinder 3: 20%
    Cylinder 4: 15%

Not ideal, but Acceptable for the time being?
