Ball Joint Boots

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by BarryDean, Feb 24, 2024.

  1. Stripping the brakes, Calipers and fitting new ball joint boots (ball joints are good) just on first and the adjuster is stuck on, I can apply heat to remove but I now have no mark for the notch, once removed and reassembled what does the notch line up with? Cannot see anything, would both side be same? I do no the adjuster controls alignment but how to line up?

A mobile phone with a Clinometer application.
Set up on level ground.. use the app to check.

Then you can use the phone against the wheel rim.. Screenshot_20240224_110901_MultiClinometer.jpg

Mark both with tippex then line up marks after the new boot is fitted

Getting both sides the same is more important than being bang on in the middle of the range.

My bus tried to drive in big circles when one side was half a degree different to the other..

  6. Tried but lost my mark in the fight to remove parts.

Only working on one side currently so if I set same as other side for now until I am ready to use a gauge to measure the camber. (still fighting the adjuster)

...with your fingers crossed that camber was set correctly last time it was apart which IME would be a rare thing indeed!
put the notch facing the front of the van is the start point before setting the camber. Assuming you will set the camber with a gauge do it before setting toe.

  8. Sound will do that with both and then set with gauge that seems a million miles away at moment sun is shining though so enjoy the moment.

    Cheers

  9. Pack the boots with grease before install?

  10. Be very careful around heating certain balljoints! A guy I work with was heating a Mercedes Sprinter suspension arm to remove a ball joints and it exploded with an almighty bang and let's just say he went home with ringing in his ears and in need of a change of underwear but it could have been a lot worse if the exploding joint had hit him .I think it was due to the expansion of grease in the ballpoint .

  11. Don't think even David Blaine could get the top spring back on the rubber boot. Out of options...............Until : Cable ties.

Yeh those springs are really fiddly getting them on.
About 20 tries then you mess up by poking them through the rubber. But it is possible. I managed in the end.

  14. Cable ties is the key so you can spread the spring.

Passenger side ones flew on so I am the Boot Master now. New caliper, disc & pads was easy after all that work just to change some boots. Should be all back together this week then going garage to check/adjust camber.

  15. You may find that the "single concertina" boots pull off at extreme angles. You can get double-concertina ones, which stay put.

Most garages cant do Bay Windows because its not on the computer.

Its easier to DIY than book it in only for PFY to say "cant do it , computer says no", after taking the keys, you going off to McDonalds for a coffee, coming back and nothing done. Or they will moan about the part covered rear wheels that stop them getting their machine attached.

The magic Bahco skinny plumbers adjustable spanners that fit the skinny nuts (need ?? 37 mm somewhere in the spanners range .smaller one only goes to 35mm, so need next bigger size) are about £25 -£30.
Skinny spanner (jaws machined down to about 4mm wide) not plumber..

I succeeded once with getting an alignment done by ATS Euromaster, home of White Van Person, by placing a copy of the Bentley manual with the page with the values on it, on the front passenger seat.

  17. Wish I new this before :-0 They did pop off a few times. Don't fancy doing it all again.
But while it's in the air do I swap to the 'Double Concertina' ? Anybody else had issues with the single style boots?

Ha ha - used to love BOFH

  19. I noticed it doing my "spare" arms. Full deflection will make the single concertinas pop off, even though they're clipped on (and, yes, the clips are real beggars to get on). Not sure if you'd get that deflection in normal use, but worth fitting the double-rib ones. Can't remember where I got mine from.

I have center poped a mark next the notch on the arm and hoped it was ok originally .
