The crusader with a Detroit 2 stroke in it sounded nice ....they had Rolls Royce Eagle diesels in as well as Leyland 680's .
If you go on U tube and put in scammell crusader 2 stroke ...some nice sounds .

  3. The old Detroit Diesels rock  Unfortunately had to go 4-stroke to avoid ruining Greta's childhood.

The 2 stroke diesels require a different style of operation to 4 strokes . You have to keep your revs up or you loose your power ..hence the screaming . The Foden 2 stroke was slightly more better on fuel consumption than the Gardner not much mind and only if it was driven at manufactures recommendation .
I remember driving my foden 2 stroke about 550 miles in the one day ...i had a distant hissing in my ears for about 2 days after...bit like listening to the Damned front stage for a day .

Driven a Detroit engine in a Bedford techmaster but although they went like stink on the flat they had no grunt uphills and couldn’t pull a greasy man out of bed, the rolls Royce with fuller twin splitter box on twin air clutch and oversized pump on my marathon went like a rocket and pulled like a train uphill and down dale!

when I was working for the water board motor garage in the 70's we serviced and repaired a Thornycroft that was converted from a prime mover to a crane. I think it was the 30's or 40's Sturdy model

When I lived in Hersham in the early 80s, one of our housemates had a Mini Marcos. Don’t think I’ve seen one since.
