Help! The guy doing my resto has gone AWOL....

I have to agree with the above....i know some people are laid back and can't be pushy 'cos it's not in their nature, but just 'cos youre 120 miles away or going on holiday etc etc.....i mean come on! book the day off work, phone in sick, hire a trailer whatever...even if it costs you £1000 to get it back one way or another it's got to be your number one priority.

I do think some of you talk too much tosh on here ... it seems to me the landlord nor the police have no interest in this matter nor rights to give 'their approval to' breaking down the door.

Probably if he is doing a runner from the unit the the landlord is similarly pursuing him through the courts or at least should be if he has any other assets.

Mind I am not so sure I would have been so relaxed as the OP ... but trust me my experience says it is difficult in these situations so I can understand why the OP hasnt taken the +ve action you all seem to be clammering for

You have to remember that he might be very good mates with his landlord, he could be fully paid up with the landlord and given him a different storie to what is going on , ie doing abit of work on that camper and the owner is a right moaning Illegitimate child etc etc don't let him in he won't pay me for the work I've done etc etc etc

If it was me I would of found the guy sooner and seen the van sooner, if I could not find the guy but I had his house address etc I would take a few days off to wait ask the neighbours find out if they had any family close by etc, If I had a contact at his unit I would get them to call me when they see him and head over asap and as fast as I could so I could catch them.

If all that failed and I was sat waiting months just to "SEE IF" my van was still inside his unit then (I know it's not right) I would brake the door in and take the risk of getting a call from the police.

I would replace any lock or damage done while getting in and give the new keys to either the landlord or the other contact at that work place.

At all time I would have every bit of paperwork I have for the van and the so say work he was going and any other letters etc I had sent him about getting the van back.

I would not have mates with me as this could look bad maybe someone to stay with a tow vehicle when removing the van but not 5 or 6 blokes just waiting about etc

I've been owed money and had vehicles stored at different places and I've taken simular action in the past, if you let the guy think he can just hide and your send letters then he will hide, if you show him your going to be a big fecking pain for him no matter where is goes then he'll give the van back.

As anybody who has had a car stolen will tell you, all they'll do even when a vehicle is actually stolen is give you a crime reference. When it's potentially going to be, they'll get back to their doughnuts.
I'll happily be proven wrong, but that's my opinion.

That may be case if there are no viable lines of enquiry.i.e no forensics CCTV or known suspects etc etc . In THIS instance we have a known suspect(the gagrage owner) a known address for him (the workshop) a witness/victim (the guy whose bus is it) other avenues of of enquiry such as speaking to the landlord of the workshop and other traders in area...the allegation would be investigated.... it may just be that the police visit the guy either at home or his workshop and establish the location of the bus and the guys intentions and satisfy themselves that this matter is a civil one as regard to criminal, but in order to do that they would have to investigate the matter which they would do...trust me I speak from the voice of experience on this one.

The moral of the story: don't trust everybody, don't get a restoration done miles away have it done local, going through the wonderful British courts will lose you your bus and all the costs.

Let's be honest if he files for bankruptcy your shagged.

You have had plenty of advice and even offers from others to collect your bus for you.

It's about time you grabbed the bull by the horns and take control of the situation.

Over Christmas I went to his workshop and also knocked on his front door. He was not at either place. I really want to see this guy and go to his workshop as it would be so much easier to get my stuff back with his agreement. One problem I have is living 120 miles away from this chap - I just can't pop over as it is a 2 hour train journey each way. Nearer 3 1/2 if you add bus/tube either end! I did call the police previously but was told that technically my bus is NOT stolen and it is a civil matter and should go through the courts, which I am doing.

I am thinking at the moment I will take Friday morning off work and go there on the early train. If I can't see him anywhere I will leave letters at his home and workshop informing him of my intention to get the bus and my parts etc removed from his workshop. Someone made a valid point about the [glow=red,2,300][glow=red,2,300]FACT[/glow][/glow] that even if he is going to finish the work, what standard will it be to assuming he DID have a back injury? Once he has finished trading I will have no redress at all and he will have no means to rectify things either.

Unfortunately I 'm on holiday for a week from Sunday so it will be 2 weeks until I can look to organise a trailer, talk to the police, landlord and a locksmith. This is not something I can really get someone else to do as I need to ensure all my bus parts, interior, parts I have since supplied and those I have paid him for are there. I also need to consider this may not be as easy as it sounds as my bus was previously at the back of the workshop with 2 other vehicles in front of it. I am sure neither the police or landlord would support me removing these 2 vehicles by force in order to retrieve mine.

i have'nt posted on this thread before but have followed it with interest .

Well done Fronkjunior for doing things the right way , you have given the chap the benefit of the doubt ,acted with integrity and gone through all the correct channels , i know these things can be long and drawn out especially if the other person is not being entirely up front , so karma for that .

However one of our biggest mistakes in life is to judge people by our own standards , if you are a person of integrity then you naturally expect everyone else to be the same , conversely if you are a less scrupulous person then i'm afraid you again naturally expect others to be of a similar nature , you are obviously the former .

I think you have given this guy enough time and what others are saying is - its on the cusp of going wrong for you .

i would make arrangements to beg steal or borrow a suitable trailer and vehicle capable of towing a two ton van , gather up some friends - dazzle is nearby pm him and see if he can arrange some people to meet you at the unit - and go collect your vehicle forthwith , you will likely have to forego any moneys paid and work not done , but if you truly have done as much as you say and the replys recieved have been as stated , i think its time for action .

i truly understand you may not be comfortable with confrontation and may find facing him hard , but if you do not act soon then i am afraid your likely to be taken to the cleaners .

I dont understand their policies but I do know about their levels of investigation. I'm sure if a copper is tasked with investigating something, it'll happen. My point is the desk monkey who answers the call will just decide its not a police matter or not bother passing the information on to the right people.
I got pulled by a false police car driven by someone who tried to carjack me. When they punched me in the face, and I smashed my car door into their legs, the police were not interested in the slightest. They didnt even try to get CCTV footage even though it was in a motorway service station carpark which was covered. I gave them descriptions, and the car registration, along with details of the 2 accomplice cars, immediately it happened but it took them 2 weeks to come round and see me.
Dont try and tell me what a caring service they are because I know how they pick and choose what to investigate. A civil matter certainly wont be top priority as no doubt there are no targets for them.
(I fully understand there are probably some good ones out there, but I can honestly say I've only ever come up against the ones who are not worthy of the job)

I've written it before but I'll add it again incase you missed it: I will be more than happy to be proved wrong here, but this is MY opinion based on MY experiences.

All I'm saying is that reporting it stolen is means to an end to get the guys bus back in all probability it is a civil dispute but if he reports it stolen then the police will have to visit the garage owner and will this hopefully inadvertently resolve the matter one way or the other its not wasting police time as Fonk genuinely doesn't know where his bus is and the garage owner is being very evasive.
I'm not blinded in any way by what I see and do and I am acutely aware that "its a civil dispute" is sometimes police code for fobbing people off with out actually investigating anything, but if Fonk insists the local nick investigate this... and he can do that by complaining to the duty officer if he is fobbed off then I'm sure that the local plod will at the very least speak to the garage owner.
