Ah thank you... I'd be interested to know what he reckons, but I think I'll go for the rebuild on mine... I'm used to hearing about grinding cranks and replacing barrels and pistons on here, so the words are at least familiar... and a full rebuild price of £500 seems fair I think. At least it's a known engine (it was the one that came with Henry when Dad bought him 35 years ago) and the damage is probably down to sporadic use and lack of regular servicing more than anything else. The water passageways in the engine were clogged with rust, the oil in the sump was like treacle...
    It is what it is.

  2. Hmm, don't the 1300/1800 marina engines go in them?

Apparently so.... we did joke about bunging an 1800 in, though I feel that may be a little scary!!

  4. Personally I think they look real nice with the slightly wider marina type wheels on. Gives them a bit of a deep dish and a much better more modern tyre choice too. 1800, disc brakes, new wheels, daily driver. :)

Well, the 1300 Marina is an A series so it's a fairly straightforward swap, although the gearbox is Triumph based. The 1800 is the B series and is rather different, but you'd essentially be doing a Riley 1.5 conversion which used the 1500cc B series, and a higher final drive. More popular in the day was to stick a Fiat twin cam in ...

A Wolsley 1500 engine drops in with slight mods to the rad .

  10. ... But then you lose the A series farty exhaust which is half the charm or more. £500 rebuild sounds good to me.

Also, going faster than 50 mph in a moggy is not advisable

Definitely, I love the farty exhaust sound when I change gear.
To be honest, an engine rebuild is fine, and it’ll be good for years after…. It’s a fair price too. It’s just the six weeks til I get it back that is making me sad…. Mid October :( there will only be a couple of weeks to enjoy it before winter.

I hear there’s an old Ford down in the west country at the moment that’s not using its 2L engine, maybe I could borrow that……

A nice dry winter cruise in it is always an option!

I dunno, they are just as steady as a bay ....80 mph no problem on a motorway with my old moggy ...socks stuffed in between window and door to stop rattling ...i was surprised how fast they would go . The old Speedwell head kit you could get for them used to knock um up a bit too .

And there was me thinking I’d just buy back Henry, pootle around, go to a few British Classic weekends, picnics with scones and jam, lashings of ginger beer, solve a few murders along the way, and just generally live the lifestyle of a mad old bag with a Morris Traveller
    *sigh*
Still, at least the gearbox is rebuilt and back!

There was a brace of moggies down at Christchurch this weekend for the last “Classics on the Quay” for the summer. Think they had over 600 cars turn up!
