MOT Failed - Is the Quote Fair

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by 79_Viking, Sep 4, 2012.

  1. Hi All,

So our Camper had its MOT today.. and failed :'( on split rear CV Boots and its Horn not working (completely forgot to check it before it went in)
So the garage have quoted £120 ??? to replace CV Boots.. is this fair?

Parts are approx £12-15 I realise the bill will mainly be for labour..

The other deciding factor is that if they do the work the retest is free.. so taking it away to get the work done would need to be substantially cheaper...
I don't have the time or 'know how' at moment to do the work myself..

Thanks for taking the time to read this..

    Kris

it's a bit dear for an hours work.....

  3. Would it take an hour to replace both on the rear? or an hour each?

all 4 boots split? it's not a hard job really shame you haven't got time cos it's not hard, a hour to do all with ramps is plenty

cheap? i paid £29 and passed......

  7. If you can afford it let them do it, it could be a bugga if you cant get bolts undun, and make sure you get decent ones ive heard some of the after market jobeez are marmite and dont last very long, so id make a point of that to the garage if you let them do it as you dont want ta have ta do em again next year/month ;)

  8. Does anydody know the brand of the 'Marmite' boots? Just so that I can make sure that they avoid them?

  9. Also make sure they fit new bolts and washers and spreader plates or they might be coming undone if your not careful, check torque after a few miles, sorry dont know make. Good luck as said cheap mot really.

    meh you're too thorough

  12. wot morkC68 said.....

I had 1 side done by a very decent chap in Bristol (who gets a well deserved big up on this forum), he charged £20 per hour and it took him 3 hours to shift the aforesaid rounded off bolts and general bad maintenance over the 30+ years before I became the owner.

All in all - I would pay the chap to do it.

  13. Price the parts up yourself and try to supply them to the Garage. then they should give you an hourly rate for the labour on the bus. and stand beside them watching!!!!!

as that quote seems a bit dear but not a total ripp off

    Zed Gradually getting grumpier

    £20's no doubt VAT
Boots are at least £6 each so that's about £25
£75 for labour's not so bad?

  19. I agree with mork and poptop , n make sure they dont get no crap in the cvs or that a be the next job. Really they should be stripped right down cleaned and repacked with grease ,i dont think that price is atall bad if they do proper job.

  20. Wow thanks all.. Appreciate all the replies!
It's got to come home till tuesday as they don't have room to do work now.. so I will probably have a look at the horn.. hopefully a loose connection..

Would really appreciate any info on the CV Boots to avoid, if anyone has it?
Will defo make sure I mention the points raised about bolts, washers spreader plates etc.. don't want this doing again in 12months..
